=WHO TO CALL AND WHEN=

In 2004, Free Geek recycled 226 tons of material. We could not have done this without our material handlers who pay us to separate the stuff and actually do the recycling. In order to keep Free Geek from being crushed under the weight of our bad or obsolete donations, a fair amount of phone calls, e-mails, and fork-lifting is required...
*WHAT: Batteries = NON-Recyclable ONLY
Sorted batteries can be taken to Metro for processing, but we need to take it to them. Batteries that came out of the home have free recycling (the state pays for it), and we need to emphasize every time we're there that we are not generating these ourselves, that they are a byproduct of home computer use, that we are an organization that transfers them to Metro.
In 1993 the EPA made a change in the formula for Alkaline batteries to lower the amount of metals in them, and then changed their administrative ruling to allow Alkalines to go into a landfill. At the moment, to our knowledge, all Alkalines go into the landfill. Further information on alkaline battery recycling is needed.
Sorted batteries can be taken to Metro for processing, but we need to take it to them.

During my SVN training a few weeks ago I finally had the opportunity to change the outdated information on our recycling vendors. In looking at the recycling section of the website again, and having stumbled upon the Toxins in Computers wiki page and the "Reasons to recycle computers" stub, I'm thinking I would like to expand the information on our web site to better educate the public on electronics recycling.

This relates to a separate, but similar project I've been thinking and talking to Guy and Nathan about: improving the recycling wiki to include photos of components and make it more useful for training volunteers. Guy and Nathan want to put consoles in the recycling area with access to just this wiki, for easy reference when folks have questions about where something goes, or what happens to it.

So I've created this page as a place to brainstorm ideas for better documentation in the recycling area, uniting my twin passions for writing and smashing stuff. A great deal of the wiki information is out of date as well, or even obsolete, so this is also something of a to-do list to encourage me to clean up the existing documentation While this page exists primarily for my reference, it's public because I'm always happy to get feedback from concerned parties about what they want to know about recycling. (Sometimes I don't know what's going on in my head, or in my life, until I put it in writing.) And seeing as I'm possibly the least left-brained person ever anywhere (see above parenthesis), advice on better organization is always welcome.

Xen's documentation to-do list:

* Many of the proposals in Procedural changes for recycling have come to pass. This page needs to be revised and merged with Covering Recycling On A Daily Basis, which is a leetle behind the times.
* What goes where finally has my much-dreamed of ASCII floor plan of the warehouse. I need to check again and make sure this is accurate, as the warehouse is under constant reorganization these days. This contains some out-of-date information on vendors, however, and is a little lengthy. And this is where I'd like to add a few photos.
* PDX Recycling Vendors contains out-of-date information about who use and what they take. It might be a good idea to break it up some -- just the facts on who we're using now, but also info on folks we've worked with in the past (Quantum, E-Recycling, etc.) just in case we ever need a backup or something.
* Recycling Status: Neglected for months, but starting to get the love it deserves again. Will try to update this at least once a week, if not once a day.
* Forklift Maintenance: Will update when our in-the-air forklift situation gets cemented.
* What's it worth?: Add information about our trial run with TCG.
* Shipping diary and estimates: This page hasn't been updated in months. It was created partly so that I could assist Richard in making predictions about recycling income based on bills of lading. I don't know if it ended up being a useful tool for that after all, or if I should can it. Talk to Richard about this and solicit information from other interested parties.
* Procedural changes for recycling -- first bullet item.
* Toxins in Computers -- I like this author's idea of a "Reasons to recycle computers" page for the website. I'd like to see the website include the basic information we have now on vendors and hard drive destruction (including Calbag's certified destruction offer), with additional information on the health costs of e-waste, why we don't sell to recyclers who send scrap overseas, pending e-recycling legislation, and the like.

'''Help! I am in desperate need of correct content!'''

=Day to Day Requirements=
*Volunteers - Many show up at 11 and again at 3, though walk-ins and odd shifts exist on a daily basis. You need to get them started, after a brief explanation of where things go, they can work (for the most part) with little supervision. Get them acquainted with the bins and show or explain how to tear apart a system, or other project.

*Also make sure the first batch of monitors for burn-in is set up (this should happen before Free geek opens) and try to find a monitor tester, since we no longer have sponsored interns coming in to handle this task on a predictable basis. While monitor testing is not strictly a recycling task, it is in the recycling coordinator's best interest to have monitors cycling through the warehouse quickly and efficiently. Try to get testers to stack monitors for recycling into gaylords as they go.

*As gaylords become full, they will have to be switched out for new ones. Use the pallet jack to move the full bin over to the rows of gaylords waiting to leave. Sweep out the empty space if it needs it (it does) and place a new pallet on the floor with the slots facing out (so it can be moved when it, in turn, is full). Take a gaylord from the stack and lug it over by the pallet. Unfold it into box shape and choose an end to be the bottom. Fold the flaps inward to form the bottom and place it on the pallet. There is a right way to align the gaylord with the pallet; if it seems wide and shallow, you have it on wrong.

=Areas of Recycling=
==Warehouse Organization==
Once bins fill up and are replaced, they should be placed in designated areas to reduce the work involved in taking inventory and getting shipments out the door. Right now, items are sorted by vendor; once you are familiar with [[PDX Recycling Vendors]] and what they take, it should be fairly easy to remember. As you stand behind the recycling bench, facing south, you should see five rows of gaylords.
*The first row from the left, single stacked, consists of open gaylords of keyboards, CBM and monitors. These should be swapped out as soon as they are full. Though it is almost inevitable that monitors tend to stack up in front of gaylords, try not to let this happen, as it will slow down your workflow and bins will overflow like crazy while you try to find a new place for the monitors.
*The second row from the left should contain double-stacked gaylords of plastics. Once you have six full gaylords, it's time to call E-Recycling.
*The next two rows contain double-stacked gaylords of CBM, keyboards, wires, cords, motors, floppy drives, circuitboards, hard drives and everything else that Calbag buys from us.
*The final row -- the one nearest the wall by the black hole - contains monitor overflow. These should be double-stacked. However, monitors are often stacked quite poorly, so inspect gaylords carefully before stacking them and make sure volunteers are well-educated in the fine art of monitor tetris. Keeping two or three open monitor gaylords open at a time can also aid in efficient packing.

==The Bench==
Almost every tool needed to de-manufacture a computer and many that are not can be found scattered the length of the bench. Power screwdrivers are hardwired to the bench with fixed Phillips head bits. Screws have many containers that collect screws as well as containers for batteries. Gloves can be found on the shelves below and at the end of the bench closest to the Mad Max cart is a first aid kit. Tell the volunteers that if they run across something you didn't cover, run into a problem or forget where stuff goes, just set it aside and ask you the next time they see you, and then make sure they see you often enough for this to work. If you also cannot deal with it, place it in a box for someone to deal with later.

===Pre-Op Bins Behind The Bench===
*Daughter Boards - All ISA, PCI, AGP and other daughter boards that come to recycling are to start off here. People coming from testing, card and motherboard sorting, or build with boxes full of these things are to be told to put them here.

*Small Steel - Small steel pieces such as the faceplates from daughter boards and numerous other forms are easier to dump into the bin than standing on your head in the mad max cart to gather a thousand little pieces and throw handfuls of them into the air.

*Stainless steel - Inside of computers, one runs across a lot of shiny thin metal. Some of it is stainless steel; most of it is just steel. Only a magnet knows for sure. Magnets are affixed to the waist-height edge of the workbench in several places. If the shiny metal is held to the magnet after you let go, it is steel, and should be placed in the Mad Max cart or the small steel, depending on its size. If it slides off the magnet or will barely stick at all, it is stainless and should be placed in the box.

*Aluminum - A plastic tub. This is the place for aluminum which is mostly encountered as heat sinks from on top of processors. Aluminum can be identified with a magnet; it is metal that will not stick at all. This qualification may confuse it with stainless, but aluminum is rarely used as thin or shiny, it is usually colored and thick. Quite often there will be some kind of steel apparatus to hold a heat sink to a motherboard, this should be removed and placed in the small steel bin. Fans are also embedded in heat sinks and should be removed and placed with the fans.

*Fans - This cardboard barrel is for any fans that are found inside the computers. It is not necessary nor is it recommended that volunteers open up power supplies to remove those fans.

*Speakers - Most computers have a naked speaker inside of them, this cardboard barrel is where they go.

*Hard Drives - This cardboard barrel is for the hard drives (which are frequently mistaken for floppy drives). You should point out the obvious difference between them; hard drives have no door to allow things to be put inside. You may need to explain this many times if hard drives keep showing up in the motor bin. Floppy drives should be removed from this barrel and placed in the motor bin while or before emptying this barrel into the gaylord of hard drives out on the warehouse floor.

*Batteries- These toxic nastys are to be gathered and sorted into two categories:
# rechargeable
# not rechargeable
and then the nonrechargeable are sorted into
# alkaline
# NiCad
# lithium
# Button cells.
Once they are sorted they are to be sealed in 5 gallon buckets and labeled properly.Once the buckets are labeled they can live by the stack of broken down gaylord boxes.Due to leakage of batteries latex gloves should be worn during this process .
"If it had been an outright junkyard, probably he could have stuck things out, made a career: the violence that had caused each wreck being infrequent enough, far away from him, to be miraculous, as each death, up until the moment of our own, is miraculous. But the endless rituals of trade-in, week after week, never got as far as violence or blood, and so were plausible for the impressionable Mucho to take for long. Even if enough exposure to the unvarying gray sickness had somehow managed to immunize him, he could still never accept the way each owner, each shadow, filed in only to exchange a dented, malfunctioning version of himself for another, just as futureless, automotive projection of somebody else's life. As if it were the most natural thing. To Mucho is was horrible. Endless, convoluted incest."

The padlock on the trailer (combo 1731) belongs to us and must be removed and placed on the new trailer. Total Reclaim has this combo and the directive to switch it on file, but it is a $25 lock, and we should do the switch to insure we keep it.
*CAPACITY: Small bucketloads
Bless me, councilors, for I have slacked. It's been three months since my last recycling report. The last three months have been more chaotic than usual for me, as I have been dealing with personal health issues and an exceptional surfeit of hardware donations, both of which have left me too buriby106fd.bay106.hotmail.msn.com/cgi-bin/hmhome?fti=yes&curmbox=00000000%2d0000%2d0000%2d0000%2d000000000001&a=781b06dc570b0da5135c448daf37b2c151574a5a4711d6a3df118c776a1825fbed and fatigued to file proper and regular reports. However, things are getting back on track again, and though they are coming along slowly, I'm trying to make the recycling area look and run much better. I've had a ton of help from Guy and Nathan, who built shelving for incoming monitors, and rearranged the wlo-filling bins to create an additional workstation near the black hole. Not only that, the area behind the recycling work bench is no longer a death trap. It's not a perfect system, but it's something.

Recycling has seen several important changes since my last report. Anecdotally, we are simply handling much, much more hardware than we were when I started my job in June. I have learned the hard way that this makes for a much smaller margin of error when it comes to my job. One missed or cancelled pickup (as I experienced today), one huge hardware donation, one forklift breakdown -- all of which have occurred in recycling in the last month -- can take days or even weeks to get un-buried. Heck, we received a donation of a film-to-video translator last week, and that alone blocked much of the recyling work area for several days.

I think this ties in with the recent discussion of how to reduce clutter at Free Geek. I would agree with Matthew's assessment that while it may look like we are being complacent about clutter, it's a fact that we all spend a lot of time cleaning up messes. It's just that new messes replace recently-cleaned ones very quickly. That said, I also like Richard's ideas for helping Free Geek in general become more organized -- particularly, puttign someone in charge of each given work area. Not only does it build in accountability; when one person is responsible for a specific area and want to make it run smoothly, that can force people to make decisions about an object rather than hem and haw about whether and how it might be useful. The recycling area is often used to store large items that aren't there to be recycled (say, the shoe bike, or pallets of grant boxes), or large items that take a long time to recycle. I try to be a good sport about this, but because it does congest the recycling area, I try to get a timeline from the parties who placed them there and work around it. If I can't get a timeline, I throw down a deadline ("three days or it goes in the steel dumpster").

Some other important recycling news:
* We are now selling motherboards, processors, wires, cords, motors, etc. to Calbag Metals, a family-owned metals recycler in Portland. Calbag's specs have led us to make a number of important procedural changes in the recycling area. These are documented on the wiki and our reorganization and change in signage reflects the changes as well. If you haven't been back to the warehouse in a while, or if you haven't checked out the recycling wiki pages in a while, please do so. I'm a bit behind on this, but still working to include current information about recycling income, the prices we get for materials, and to keep the shipping diary up-to-date so we can keep track of both money and recycling tonnage. Mmmm, tonnage. So, a shameless plug: http://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php/Recycling. This includes a totally rockin' ASCII graphic of the new warehouse layout. So, if you've got something in your hand that's marked for recycling but you're not sure where it goes now, let your fingers to the walking.
* Oh yeah! The L-wing. Our forklift, the beloved L-wing fighter, is still not running. Our forklift mechanics, Premier Lift Truck Services out of Tualitin, have sent us a loaner forklift -- the lovely standup model with no side-shift and with the horn button that sticks. It's a workable, temporary solution, but the action committe is still the debating the following options: 1) the coast of fixing the L-wing (at press time we didn't have a quote from the mechanic yet); 2) leasing a new forklift; 3) writing a grant for a new one. There is DEQ money available should we choose option #3, but it won't be available until this falls, says Oso. Some friends of Free Geek are putting a bee in local business' bonnets about a possible donation. Anyone with leads on any of these options is encouraged to e-mail action@lists.freegeek.org.
* This week Oso and I met with an account representative from Waste Connections, Inc., a local company that's interested in selling or leasing us a baler. It would cost $350 to $450 to lease a baler, with a 19 percent interest rate -- expensive. However, baled steel, cardboard, paper and plastic -- all of which are a wash for us now -- is likely to bring in enough income to at least cover our monthly payments. No decisions have been made yet, but we'll keep the community posted.

That's the news from here, but if there are any more questions or concerns about recycling, I'd like to know. If I'm not in the warehouse, I'm in my office, and if I'm not in my office, I'm reachable by e-mail.
Iciclehttp://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php?title=User:Icicle&diff=11932User:Icicle2006-01-18T03:07:31Z
Icicle:
