{{RightTOC}}
This is a list of Free Geek programs and functions organized by the staff committee that is charged with their oversight. We are asking each committee or person responsible to post a brief description of the state of each program.

''(For more information on each committee see the [[Standing Staff Committees]] page.)''

NOTE: When updating a section, please '''sign your work with the "four squiggles" syntax (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>)''' so we can see when the item was last updated (and by whom). ''(In theory, reports that are unsigned were created by someone from the committee or responsible for the indicated program before this note was added. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 09:06, 26 January 2007 (PST))''

== Action ==
;Recycling
: Shipments are going out once a week to each of our vendors. We recycle close to 200 monitors, about 3 tons of steel, 400 lb of plastic, 600 lb of wire and cords, and many more pounds of other copper bearing material every week.(estimated numbers)
: A new lay out for the ware house is in the planning stages.[[User:Liane|Liane]] 15:35, 7 July 2007 (PDT)

;Receiving
: Receiving has been so organized and clean lately, it's frightening, even though the stream of donations never seems to stop for longer than a couple of minutes. We have stopped receiving loose batteries, and are referring donors to other places like Radio Shack with their baggies. [[User:Liane|Liane]] 15:35, 7 July 2007 (PDT)

;Maintenance and design of the physical plant
: We Passed the Fire Inspection. The other things of priority are replacement of the warehouse door that was damaged from the break in(waiting on bids). Next on the list is rewiring of the Black Hole (waiting on bids). There are more issues that need to be dealt with these issues have a separate RT ticket. If you see an item that is a facilities maintenance issue, send a ticket to todo at freegeek dot org with the word "action" in the header.

;Building security
: We are in the middle of getting mass repairs to all our external doors. Our annual re-keying of the locks has happened June 28th. --[[User:Matteo|Matteo]] 11:00, 12 July 2007 (PDT)

;General safety
: Receiving and Recycling are asking volunteers to use gloves and safety glasses when breaking stuff.
: Please remember to keep aisles free of debris, and pathways inside the building free of random stuff, because it is required by the fire department, and we have volunteers and guest using wheelchairs, or other mobility devices.
: First Aid kits are refilled regularly. Please let E-Beth know of if we're missing something.
: We are also working on a [[Safety]] policy. --[[User:Matteo|Matteo]] 11:00, 12 July 2007 (PDT)

== C7 ==
;Policy development
: Currently cleaning up the policy structure in the wiki, adding links and history. Wiki clean up mostly being done by volunteers. We are seeking volunteers to help with this. (See Matteo or anyone from C7.) [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 10:43, 17 February 2007 (PST)

;load balancing of the committees
: All of the committees have enough people, but some committees function better than others, partly because some people are better at being committee members than others. Some committees (such as HR) may be overstaffed. Some committees could be broken up into different committees, but this might create too many committees to be practical. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 10:43, 17 February 2007 (PST)

;liaison with Free Geek Community Council and Free Geek Board of Directors
: Developing this page as a snapshot of information hopefully helps keep the council and board better informed about the state of things. Board members are coming to council meetings on a regular basis. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 10:54, 12 May 2007 (PDT)

;nominations to the various committees
: HR has may have a person too many people on it. With an expected some staff changes in the next year, expect to see some shifting about. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 10:54, 12 May 2007 (PDT)

;proposals concerning changes to the committee structure itself
: We are thinking about ideas expressed in [[Multi-Collective Free Geek]] as a starting point for a possibly different committee structure. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 10:43, 17 February 2007 (PST)

;accounting and financial oversight
: We have moved to monthly reporting of quarterly budgets. We have reorganized the expense categories to mirror the committee structure, have recoded the last three years of income transactions, are working on better income projections based on that. We need to review policies about handling money from time to time. We need to educate the committees on how to spend money when they're not sure how ahead or behind they are vis a vis the budget. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 10:54, 12 May 2007 (PDT)

== HR ==
;Human resources
: We're working towards a long-term (one year-ish) hiring strategy.

;volunteer management
: Rewards such as core BBQ are covered by Inreach (Outreach work group) and are a huge success.

;volunteer and staff discipline
: We have a [[Volunteer Discipline Policy]]. There are a few active tickets in our Volunteer Issues queue which is visible to staff only. Active tickets in the queue are reviewed at HR meetings.

;procedures regarding theft from Free Geek
: This is handled mostly by our [[Volunteer Discipline Policy]]. There have been a few incidents in the past that are still open.

;mediation between conflicting parties
: We do this as it needs to be done. There have been a few formal mediations, but generally we try to get people to talk to each other to head that off.

;volunteer and staff scheduling
: Volunteer scheduling is done on paper, and works mostly. Tour guides are now scheduled, basic testing is off the schedule, and special volunteering can be written in on the miscellaneous area. Staff scheduling is semi automated but last minute changes eat up time (and money). It would be good to have a program that makes this easier.

;staff and intern reviews
: We have a schedule in place for reviews but they tend to slide, sometimes excessively. Reviews generate documentation about goals. etc., which may or may not be being completed consistently.

;volunteer acculturation and training
: Trainings are not happening in a consistent way, but there are a few in the works. There has been a lack of people signing up in the past. We'd like to do a consensus training, a wiki training, a training in website admin. The discussion on the Council email list about the Education Program & Coordinator reflects much of the varied perspectives about volunteer trainings.

;health care and benefits packages
: Staff collective members have health care (including alternative care such as naturopathy), sick, vacation, and holidays. The health plan was just renewed and costs us approximately $345 per person per month. Some collective members use other plans and are eligible to reimbursed for most of their costs in lieu of taking our plan. We are adding a retirement benefit, where Free Geek will match up to 3.2% of a collective members salary, providing the collective member make an equal or greater contribution to a 503(b) plan (similar to a 401(k) plan, but for nonprofits). [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 14:32, 7 July 2007 (PDT)

;employee manual
: The [[Staff Handbook]] is on the wiki. It is a work in progress.... and by progress we mean perpetually incomplete.

== Knowledge Bees ==
;Education
: Adoption classes are happening twice a week. More Volunteer Adoption Teachers would be great. ([[User:MichaelWestwind|MW]] 13:42, 15 May 2007 (PDT))
: The advanced linux class series has been restarted ([[User:MichaelWestwind|MW]] 13:42, 15 May 2007 (PDT))

;Documentation
: Lots of documentation continues to happen. ([[User:MichaelWestwind|MW]] 13:42, 15 May 2007 (PDT))

;Technical Support
: We have 4 days a week of tech support availability.
: We have some new volunteers. ( [[User:Stillflame|martin]] 13:47, 3 April 2007 (PDT) )

;Computers for Kids
: Pacific Crest Community school is running a Build program again with 8 of their students. We also have multiple classrooms, and kids groups come in every week to get job skills, and earn computers.
: ''(See [[Group volunteering]] for how groups of kids can volunteer.)''

;Free Geek Library
: The library has been considerably cleaned up in preparation for moving it in to the old meeting room. We are looking at library software. We need to decide a mission for the library so we can determine what books to acquire and/or keep. ([[User:MichaelWestwind|MW]] 13:42, 15 May 2007 (PDT))

== Outreach ==
''Note: Outreach split into 5 work groups which cover various aspects of the following''
;Fundraising
: We are mapping out a big picture fundraising strategy, which will derive from the big picture strategic planning FG needs to do. We saw a marked rise in monetary and hardware donations following the publicity about the breakin.--[[User:Mariadeathstar|Mariadeathstar]] 13:17, 6 May 2007 (PDT).
;grantseeking
:: Ali is a bit burnt on this, and would like to act as backup to an experienced person.
;outreach
: Currently working on upping our volunteer outreach by finishing the media kit for distribution to org.s and media. Also, want hardware grant shepherds to distribute materials to appropriate local org.s who receive stuff from us, as well as offer a FG staff member to come talk about our programs to their staffs.
;advertising and marketing
: We currently have no paid ads in the works, although we have a small budget to do so. One of our long-term projects is to re-make the brochure.
;parties, festivals and other events
: Geek Fair is on July 21st! Planning has begun, and the poster should be done soon.
;community building
: There's a work group to build these alliances.
;relations with the neighbors
: Had some issues with upstairs neighbors & parking lot but it has been effectively worked out.
;relations with the non-profit and social change communities
: Have discussed potential partnerships with Portland Community Media and Clinton St. Theater.
;membership development
: Huh? Wha? Who?
;the Free Geek website
: Gets updated as needed, although could use more maintainers. We've also been discussing moving the website to a content management system, which would make the website easy to maintain for volunteers as well. Technocrats are also looking into this, and its an ongoing issue.
;the reception area
: Also, we are scheduling volunteers that want to do our regular tours at noon and six. The front desk was recently moved back to allow for more room for visitors. Observe the spacious glory!
;public email addresses
: Getting answered every day!
;media relations
: Request for interviews about a variety of topics come in regularly (from recycling practices to hard drive security to open source creativity). We're currently working to create a media kit to send to media and put up on the website.
;advertising and design of donation pickups
: Volunteers sporadically pickup donations but we are still advertising that we do not pickup. If we want large corporate donations, we'll need to be able to do large pickups. This will probably require a dedicated vehicle.
;volunteer rewards
: Core breakfast is still happening, and we're increasing the budget by $50/month (to $250) to accommodate the increase in cost and attendance.

== Propagation ==
;Liaison with Free Geek startups (the replication of Free Geek elsewhere)
: The franchise group has an email list with members from outside of the Portland area. The Franchise group has monthly meet-ups on IRC. There is one pending application for name usage (penn), this may take a lot of time and energy. We are awaiting response from Olympia on whether they want to appeal our decision to deny them use of the name. We are finalizing a formal trademark license agreement (now waiting for a response from the government). --[[User:Matteo|Matteo]] 10:31, 3 April 2007 (PDT)

;liaison with GAP volunteers
: A list of current [[GAP]] sites is on this wiki. We have added a location at the [[Chance of Rain Cafe]] with four LTSP terminals, and we have updated the [[Red and Black Cafe|Red and Black]] intallation to LTSP as well. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 10:45, 15 May 2007 (PDT)

;Hardware Grants
: The Hardware grants group now meets seldomly, but hardware grants are still going strong. The staff recently started scheduling shifts to coordinate grants. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 10:45, 15 May 2007 (PDT)

== Reuse ==
;Freekbox, storebox, grantbox production (build)
: Build is healthy and strong, emptying all incoming piles and filling all outgoing shelves. Our [[Freekbox | specs]] [[Storebox | are]] [[Grantbox | higher]] than ever, as we ride along the wake of Moore's law.

;testing maintenance and development
: Advanced testing is running under the graces of a few very dedicated volunteers. In order for development and refinement of new procedures, more staff time will need to be allocated. Basic testing is part of the adoption program and volunteers test keyboards and mice.

;Laptops
: There is a healthy group of build graduates that have joined the Laptop build program. The laptops are dispersed as grants, and sold in the store.

;retail sales
: Retail sales has been on a steady increase for the last 5 years. The store is currently staffed full time by staff, and day to day there is usually 2-3 volunteers helping out customers, testing various gizmos, and stocking the shelves. There have been some bumps starting the new year with a new POS system, but over all our accuracy in bookkeeping has never better.

; printer refurbishing and sales
: Printers is running halfway with very little supervision. We have spent a great deal of time cleaning and getting work areas ready, setting up how-to documents and getting printers ready for the store. We sell some printers as-is or bulk besides store sales. Our goals are to have printers available for both grants and the store. If there were twenty hours a week dedicated staff time the income would pay for the staff time dedicated.

; Audio/Visual
: '''(information needed)'''

;Online Sales
: Ebay sales are presently ongoing under the care of the Exploratory Online Sales Coordinator. The scope of online sales will include Craigslist and wishlist fulfillment in the very near future. [[User:Serge|Serge]] 13:09, 5 March 2007 (PST)

; locate, evaluation, and put oddball hardware into reuse
: This is done on a ad-hoc basis. The work is mostly being done by volunteers.

; wholesale or bulk sales of to-be-recycled parts
: Wholesale (or bulk) sales are surging ahead with new orders coming in. A few more hours of staff time allocated would make it less frenzied.

; Legacy Systems
: Legacy Systems is turning into a good alternative for Eval 2. The program is still in creation mode.

; [[Classic Gaming Library]]
: The existence of the CGL can neither be confirmed nor denied at this time.

; Prebuild
: We have recently added wireless cards to the types of cards we're looking for in card sorting. We are allowing prebuilders to work in Legacy Systems in lieu of Eval 2. We have started to get more corporate donations which means more identical systems, most of which are processed more easily and then sold in bulk. We are considering a few changes in Eval 1 that will make it easier to identify computers that should be recycled. And there's a ton of incoming computers, spilling into the hallway for the first time in a while. [[User:Rfs|RfS]] 14:21, 20 February 2007 (PST)

== Technocrats ==
;Liaison with Coders group
: The coders group does not function (as a group). Recently, [[User:Stillflame | Martin]] finished a project to rework the entire database to the point of rollout. He continues to add features and hunt bugs, but we are using the new code. We will need to train a core of staff and volunteers to maintain this code during the next year, because Martin has asked for an extended sabbatical for the year 2008. We are trying to reach out to other freegeeks to help maintain the code. -- [[User:MichaelWestwind|MW]] 10:29, 13 March 2007 (PDT)

;liaison with ASS group
: The ASSes have changed their meeting to the third tuesday of every month. This means more work will be done between the meetings and the meetings will be more like meetings. Much system administration work is actually being done by Martin on staff time, pulling him from doing other work. [[User:MichaelWestwind|MW]] 10:29, 13 March 2007 (PDT)

;selection of software commonly used at Free Geek
: We are looking at possible replacements for RT. Long ago we selected moodle as software that might work to maintain curriculum and tests for online classes. The [[Knowledge Bees]] are still determining whether we will actually use this. Lessdisks is slated to be replaced by LTSP, with a corresponding rework of our system imaging. Gizmo IDs were recently ameliorated to only matter among the build teachers and students, and it is planned to "soon" remove the need for any paperwork in the build area. [[User:Matteo|Matteo]] 14:15, 13 March 2007 (PDT)

;computer security
: Our [[ASS]] group is always looking for ways to improve our security. Nothing particular is bothering us at the moment, and we hope to keep it that way.

;technical infrastructure
: The server room has recently been cleaned and reorganized. The ASSes are looking at some technical options that might eventually reduce the physical number of machines needed in there. As it is, it is a bit crowded. We are in the process of updating our systems to have more recent software (debian etch). Some of the wiring is in the process of being redone to be more standards-compliant. We also want to increase our bandwidth (or effective bandwidth for our most common tasks). We have a great landlord, but the facility is inadequate for any growth. The warehouse especially is very difficult to work with. A larger (especially taller) warehouse would give recycling and storage real space to work with. Maybe Free Geek should look into buying a building? Possibly one that would also generate income. The organization could put a safe and clean facility into its vision. This is of course just a sugesstion. Imagine a facility in a neighborhood within closedistance to buses, adequate parking, and a floorplan we could design and change. The money for rent could go toward ownership of a building.
== How to get a key ==
Core volunteers and paid interns that need an external key can ask to be granted a key by the staff collective by sending a message to staff@freegeek.org and indicating what they need the key for. The collective will discuss the matter at the next possible staff meeting. If a keyholder loses a key, they must reapply to the staff collective.

For further information on who gets keys and how check out the [[After Hours Access Policy]].
== Re-keying the locks ==
* If you're re-keying the locks, check this page to estimate how many new keys will be needed. Remember to take into account non Free Geekers with keys (artists subletting from us, etc.)
* It is customary for the staff collective to reevaluate who still needs keys. This will affect the number of keys needed.
* Other key requests will undoubtedly be made, so having a few extra keys made is good. (They should be kept in the safe.)
* The keys should be numbered so they can be kept track of. The locksmith can do this. Our current locksmith (Atlasta Lock and Key) does this for no charge.
* Before the locks are re-keyed it is very important that all keyholders be notified so that folks who need access are not locked out. This is especially important for keyholders who are not on staff, as they are most likely to be forgotten.
== Big list of programs ==
Here is a list of Free Geek programs organized by the staff committee that is charged with their oversight. We are asking each committee to post a brief description of the state of each program.

''(For more information on each committee see the [[Standing Staff Committees]] page.)''

=== Action ===
;Recycling
: Recycling has seen a vendor change again. CRTs are now being sent to Total Reclaim, which is costing us more money. However, Total Reclaim has been able to give us definite info on what is happening with CRTs downstream. Within the next couple of weeks we will also start sending our plastic to Total Reclaim, and actually get paid for it, too.
:Every week we send about 3 tons of steel, and about 30 gaylords of different items to our vendors.
;Receiving
: What is the state of this program?
;Maintenance and design of the physical plant
Currently Facilities Maintenance is responding to the fire inspection corrections. The Major ones are fixing holes in walls and ceilings, exit lighting, and exit door hardware. The majority of the work is complete and we are currently waiting on Oregon electric to complete the exit lighting by the ned of the month. The reinspection was scheduled for the 10th of January, and has been rescheduled until oregon electric is finished. The Other things of priority are replacement of the warehouse door that was damaged from the break in(waiting on bids). Next on the list is rewiring of the blackhole(Waiting on bids). There are more issues that need to be dealt with these issues have a separate RT ticket. If you see an Item that is a facilities maintenance issue, send a ticket to todo at freegeek.org with action in the header.
=== C7 ===
;Policy development
: Currently cleaning up the policy structure in the wiki, adding links and history. Wiki clean up mostly being done by volunteers.

;load balancing of the committees
: All of the committees have enough people, but some committees function better than others, partly because some people are better at being committee members than others. Some committees (such as HR) may be overstaffed.

;liaison with Free Geek Community Council and Free Geek Board of Directors
: Developing this page as a snapshot of information hopefully helps keep the council and board better informed about the state of things.
: What is the state of this program?

;proposals concerning changes to the committee structure itself
: What is the state of this program?

;accounting and financial oversight
: We have moved to quarterly budgets and have an intern that's helping us develop the budgeting process. We have reorganized the expense categories to mirror the committee structure, need to work on better income projections. Need to review policies about handling money from time to time.
}}
==Policy==
''HR committee on [http://lists.freegeek.org/pipermail/minutes/2006-December/000177.html December 20, 2006]''

After hours when there's no event or meeting only authorized keyholders can be in the building. A keyholder can make instance by instance exceptions to this rule,providing keyholder stays in builing and is responsible for those persons. Such exceptions should be reported to the staff list for review.

==Notes==
===To Receive a Key===
* All staff collective members should have keys
* [[Core]] volunteers who need to be able to get in first have to
** be approved by two staff
** oriented to [[closing]] procedures
** added to the locks list

===Purging the locks list===
The combination or locks may be changed when we suspect security has been breached. When the locks or the combination is changed, everyone will be removed from the locks list and readded as they make it known they need access (and if necessary, are reapproved).
===History===
We usta use a combobox with a key inside, now we issue keys.
All members of the staff collective have keys to the internal doors. Additionally paid interns and core volunteers also have these keys as needed. Besides the staff collective the following people currently have internal keys:

* Katrina Light
* Joe McCann
* Lorraine Kerwood

== Blackhole Keyholders ==

The black hole has two locks. Both can be opened with an I key, the bottom can be opened with this key as well. This is for core laptop volunteers to be able to lock the room while they go to the bathroom and whatnot. Both locks should be kept locked when noone is working in there.
* Steve Motis
* Bill Shepherd

== Re-keying the locks ==
* If you're re-keying the locks, check this page to estimate how many new keys will be needed. Remember to take into account non Free Geekers with keys (artists subletting from us, etc.)
* It is customary for the staff collective to reevaluate who still needs keys. This will affect the number of keys needed.
* Other key requests will undoubtably be made, so having a few extra keys made is good.
== How to get a key ==

== Blackhole Keyholders ==

The black hole has two locks. Both can be opened with an I key, the bottom can be opened with this key as well. This is for core laptop volunteers to be able to lock the room while they go to the bathroom and whatnot. Both locks should be kept locked when noone is working in there.

* John Warzynski
* Steve Motis
* Bill Shepherd

== Re-keying the locks ==

=Hey wanna do some breaking of things?=
So your standing here and you want to help (or smash), but don't know what to do. This will help you get started. Below are tasks that need to happen in Recycling on a daily basis.
==Basic destruction==
Basic destruction is where systems are torn down to there small bits,even nubbins. Then these bits are sorted into different containers for shipment to recyclers. This Area is vital to the overall production at Free Geek. If the pile backs up then the rest of the building backs up with waste. Kinda like your intestines.
* '''[[Bascic Deconstruction]]'''

==Advanced Destruction==
This area is for those volunteers that have already done some basic deconstruction. It's for those who want to venture out into new realms of e-waste. Most of what happens in this area is precious metal recovery and sorting. You must ask the area coordinator if it is ok to do these tasks. Almost all of these tasks need a great deal of attention to detail.
* '''[[Advanced Deconstruction]]'''
==I want to do something less difficult==
===Media===
Most of this work is sit down deconstruction. This is whare we tear down floppies, zip disks, tapes, and removable hard disks media(occaisionally)
===Hard drive and Floppy drives===
Just what it says above. You tear apart hard drives and Floppy drive to thier components, and sort them to be shipped to the recycler.
===Non-Ferrous Metals===
This is the very complicated task of categorizing and sorting of metals. Some of these metals are Aluminum, Stainless Steel and Brass. This task must be taught before you can work on it. See Your recycling coordinator for information on how to help.
===General Cleaning===
It is important for general safety and smooth operation the the recycling area stays clean and habitable as much as possible. Piles of stuff needs to be sorted and miscellenous items need to go into the right containers. Also floors need to be swept and general clutter needs to be controlled. This is a very simple task. For information on how to complete these tasks, see your recyling coordinator.
Nathanbhttp://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php?title=Recycling&diff=16449Recycling2006-09-14T16:17:30Z
Nathanb: /* Recycling Pages */

==Recycling==
Recycling is basic in concept and complex in Practice. The process of recycling at Free Geek is always evolving. Basicly we break down electronic waste and seperate the components into different categories. How and what we categorise is always changeing.
==Bench Bins==
===Ribbon Cable and Heavy insulated Wire===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CALBAG|Vendor: CALBAG]]'''
Home for all flat IDE and SCSI type cables. On occasion they will be attached to a steel faceplate held on by nuts. The nut driver should be used to remove the faceplate so that the ribbon cable can be placed in the bin.
Thick heavy cords like those found on keyboards, mice, power cords, and the like go in here, also.

===Plastic===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#TCG|Vendor: Denton Plastics]]'''
All plastic coming from computer cases, or other electronics go into the small gaylord marked plastic.
Check all plastic for metal clips, screws, and locks before placing plastic in this bin.

*Floppies and media( not CDs) go into the small gaylord over to the side next to the table. Floppies get taken apart and the aluminum and steel get seperated. Videotapes get steel screws removed, zip disks broken apart for steel and aluminum. No metal in this bin.
*CDs get collected seperatly, they are a different kind of plastic, and are actually somewhat valuable.

===Colored wire===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CALBAG|Vendor: CALBAG]]'''
This is where the multicolored wire clipped from the power supply goes. This wire is sorted for its light insulation to copper ratio, not for its color, so remember that black, white, and gray are also colors. All "skinny" wire goes here.

===Motor Bin===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CALBAG|Vendor: CALBAG]]'''
Here is where CDROM drives, Floppy drives, and other drives come to rest.

===Powersupplies===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CALBAG|Vendor: CALBAG]]'''
Before placing anything in here, remove all cable, and wire.
Power adapters, like the powersources for speakers, printers and such, get their cord cut off, and then placed in a barrel.

===Printed Circuit Board===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CALBAG|Vendor: CALBAG]]'''
Only trained Advanced Recyclers should be putting stuff in here, because placing things here is tricky, boards must be checked before going in. A motherboard must have the processor and battery removed before placing it in the bin. Also, some bigger pieces af aluminum(heatsinks) should get removed. A daughter board must have the steel faceplate removed. These boards are referred to as ''low'' density boards.

We also have ''high'' density boards. They are the circuitboards off the back of hard drives, and go into a barrel.
We need to keep this barrel clean (no random circuitboards).
* Special Note: [[Clean Circuitboards]]

===Steel===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors# Waste connection Inc |Vendor: Schnitzer Steel]]'''
Computer Case and other steel goes here. This is the white postal tub that is armored with aluminum plates. Very Mad Max. This cart has wheels, but it is designed to roll on smooth, clean, unobstructed cement. It is important to note that the recycling floor and the parking lot outside are none of these things. When this bin becomes full, it needs to be rolled outside and tossed by hand into the forty yard drop box in the parking lot. Gloves are recommended as the inside edges of case steel are usually unfinished and brutally sharp. If today is Friday or Saturday, you will need to make it clear to all volunteers to fill the back of the bin as the front will almost certainly be full at this point in the week. There are metal stairs that you can safely climb to check the level of this bin or add things to it. If the Mad Max cart is too full, and it will get this way often without supervision, it is highly recommended that you empty it by hand from where it sits until the level of steel is low enough to allow it to be rolled outside safely.

==Warehouse Bins and Barrels==
These are gaylords on the warehouse floor that are fed mostly by receiving and you, the staff member.

===Keyboards===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CALBAG|Vendor: CALBAG]]'''
Keyboards have their own gaylord, and is usually easily identifiable by the presence of keyboards. Before they can be placed in this box, the keyboards need to have the cords cut off. Wire-cutters are always available behind the recycling bench, and the severed cords are to be placed in the Heavy Insulated Wire bin.

===C.B.M.===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CALBAG|Vendor: CALBAG]]'''
Copper Bearing Material is sort of an electronic catchall bin. Stereo equipment, VCRs, telephones, speakers, mice, scanners, modems, line switches, and all manner of computer adapters belong in the C.B.M. gaylord. Pretty much anything that seems like it might have copper inside of it and does not fit the criteria for the other gaylords can live in this box. Cut all wires before adding things to this bin.

===Monitors===
*'''[[PDX Recycling_Vendors#CALBAG|Vendor:CALBAG]]'''
To be recycled monitors get placed tretris-style in one the gaylords. We now leave the cords and bases intact.
Please don't put monitors with their screens facing down, but instead stack them in a way that will keep them from sliding and breaking.
No more than 3 levels of monitors are stacked on top of each other, we have to be able to close the lid completely.

===Aluminum===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CalBag|Vendor: CalBag]]'''
We keep 4 aluminum barrels on the warehouse floor, along the western wall, with the labels "sheet", "cast", "extruded", and "dirty". Only a person trained in telling one kind from another should be putting aluminum in them. If you don't know, ask a certified advanced recycler to show you, or leave them in a box by the adv. recycling bench.

NOTE: The shiny metal posts that are on the heat sinks from the slot type processors are non ferrous and are considered clean.

===Stainless Steel===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#QUANTUM|Vendor: CalBag]]'''

===Laptops===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#QUANTUM|Vendor: CalBag]]'''

===Hard Drive Circuitboards===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CalBag|Vendor: CalBag]]'''

===Cell Phones===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#ReCellular|Vendor: ReCellular]]'''

===Fans===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CalBag|Vendor: CalBag]]'''

===Speakers===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CalBag|Vendor: CalBag]]'''

===Hard Drive barrel===
*'''[[PDX_Recycling_Vendors#CalBag|Vendor: CalBag]]'''

===Cardboard===
Cardboard gets flattened and put outside in to the cardboard dumpster. If it seems full, climb in (at your own risk), and stomp it down.

===Paper===
Books, manuals, and the like go in the blue recycling cans that are over by the forklift. Separate out all software, plastic wrap and wire bound manuals and put only paper in these cans. One of these cans is for bottles and cans, but we generate far more paper than bottles and cans in a week, so both are frequently used for office paper. If it is Tuesday, the cans need to be brought out to the curb next to the northern entrance to the parking lot on the little patch of concrete.
* Ideally do the following with rubber gloves to protect your hands
* Look inside each of the yellow caps to see the battery acid level
* Add distilled water to each hole so the level comes just to the bottom of the yellow cap tube. Too much and the battery will spew sulferic acid all over the battery top when it charges. Not enough and the level will go down and uncover the battery plates, causing them to oxidize extra fast.
* Be sure to use DISTILLED water and a small plastic funnel
* Clean up with paper towels and wash your hands thoroughly with lots of soap to clean off the acid vapors and such.
==Who to call and when==

In 2004, Free Geek recycled 226 tons of material. We could not have done this without our material handlers who pay us to separate the stuff and actually do the recycling. In order to keep Free Geek from being crushed under the weight of our bad or obsolete donations, a fair amount of phone calls, e-mails, and fork-lifting is required...
*WHAT: Batteries = NON-Recyclable ONLY
Sorted batteries can be taken to Metro for processing, but we need to take it to them. Batteries that came out of the home have free recycling (the state pays for it), and we need to emphasize every time we're there that we are not generating these ourselves, that they are a byproduct of home computer use, that we are an organization that transfers them to Metro.
In 1993 the EPA made a change in the formula for Alkaline batteries to lower the amount of metals in them, and then changed their administrative ruling to allow Alkalines to go into a landfill. At the moment, to our knowledge, all Alkalines go into the landfill. Further information on alkaline battery recycling is needed.
