This page is an index for files that need to look a certain way when printed out, for example forms and brochures where the page layout is very important.

There are a variety of applications that can produce these printouts, including Openoffice, Glabels, and Gnumeric. please install the freegeek-deadtrees package in order to ensure that you have them all installed. if you include files on this page that are not supported by the above mentioned programs, please inform an ASS.

If there are files listed here that don't need to look a certain way when printed out, they should probably just be moved to a regular wiki page.

There are some files here that were originally uploaded as postscript files only. (The old system had a place for source files, but some authors did not commit their source files.) In those cases, the postscript file should be used as a basis for re-creating the document using open office or another appropriate application.)

To use these files click on the link. If your computer is properly configured your application will open the document. You may need to install additional software and/or configure your browser to do this.
Try and learn the reason for each of the steps. This knowledge will come in handy later on when, inevitably, things aren't going as smoothly. Your instructor will be able to answer questions and check your work. Never overlook the help that the builder to your right or left might be able to lend. |-
|width="25%" align="center"|STEPS
|width="75%" align="center"|NOTES AND DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS
|-
| Check For Broken or Damaged Parts || Visually inspect laptop for broken screen, missing keys, weak hinges, cosmetic problems, etc. If in doubt, check with your instructor and make repairs as directed.
|-
| Look at the Keeper Label || Compare to the whiteboard to make sure nothing looks out of line: e.g. there's only 256 MB of RAM or the CD Drive is read only. On the Keeper label, mark the start box on the Build line. If something seems odd (i.e. 1.5 GB of RAM with a 1.8 GHz processor), just ask your instructor.
|-
| Get a Power Supply || Grab appropriate power supply from the labeled boxes (the box labels are color-coded by brand for easy locating).
|-
| Install imaged hard drive || Get a hard drive from your instructor, install the hard drive in the caddy (attach an adapter if necessary) and then install in the laptop.
|-
| Install appropriate optical drive (if missing or CD read only).|| Check the whiteboard to see what kind of optical drive to install.
|-
| Power Up Laptop||
|-
| Enter BIOS || If you see an error message like "checksum error, defaults loaded" then your CMOS battery is dead. Ask your instructor what to do about it.
|-
| Set boot order in BIOS || Look for the boot order in BIOS. Of the available options, the preferred order is as follows : CD-ROM boots first; Hard drive boots somewhere between CD-ROM and Network; Network boots last. Get as close as possible, depending on the BIOS, but make sure the Network boot isn't before the hard drive.
|-
|While in BIOS, check the RAM || Is there at least 512 MB of RAM? If not, save and exit BIOS, add RAM sized to fill the available slots. If the laptop is High End, then it should have more than 512 MB of RAM (preferably 1 GB or more). Once the RAM is upgraded, verify the new amount in BIOS).
|-
|Boot to Ubuntu || Boot to the hard drive. Log in as "oem" (password: freegeek).
|-
|Battery Check||On the Ubuntu OS toolbar, a battery icon is visible when the battery is charging. Check the icon to see the percent of charge and make a note of it for use later on. (For 10.04: left-click icon -> click on "Laptop battery X min. until charged" -> Details -> look at Percentage.) If no icon is visible, the battery is fully charged, not seated correctly, or possibly deceased. Mark the charging start box on the Keeper label.
|-
| Get wireless working. || If there isn't already a wireless card installed, then install, configure and test a wifi card (to determine if wireless card is already present and working, try and access a website like Google). Internal (mini-PCI) is best, but PCMCIA is an acceptable second option. For wireless advice, try the Wireless Tips page.
|-
| Run basiccheck || Open the command line terminal and type 'basiccheck'. You will need to be connected to the network to test the networking step. If you encounter any errors, check with your instructor.
|-
|Test optical drive - data, sound, and DVD. || For each drive:
* Use a music disc to test sound.
* Test-read a data CD (if any data shows up in the file browser that opens, test passes. Skip this test if you have a RW, you will test data read in the next step).
* Test the DVD-ROM, if present. If a DVD icon appears on the desktop, the test passes. Do not install codecs.
|-
| Test CD/DVD writing ||
# Open up Brasero Disc Burning (under Applications > Sound & Video)
# Select Data Project
# Select examples.desktop
# Click Burn on the lower righthand side.
# When a disk is done, verify that it contains the files you wrote to it by inserting the disc and checking out what pops up. If testing another function be sure to click > File > start a new project.
|-
| Blank the CD|| Using Brasero Disc Burning, select Tools > Blank.
|-
|Check battery charging percentage||Is it almost charged or is it charging compared to last check? Make a note.
|-
|Test all USB ports || Using a USB mouse, make sure that the cursor moves and can interact with things. Do this on all the USB ports. If any of the ports don't work, check in with your instructor.
|-
| Edit Power Management || Go to System > Preferences > Power Management.
Step 1. "On AC Power" tab
* When laptop lid is closed -- set to "Blank screen"

Step 2. "On Battery Power" tab
* When laptop lid is closed -- set to "Blank screen"
* When battery power is critically low -- set to "Shutdown" (This is in preparation for Battery Test)

Step 3. "General" tab and finish
* Notification Area -- set to "Always display an icon"
* Click "Close" to save changes.
* Test setting by closing and reopening the screen lid, the desktop should reappear.
|-
| Run printme from terminal || This will give you a System ID number. If an ID number is shown, the laptop has been through the system previously.
# You must be on the wired network
# From a terminal, type printme
# NOTE: Always select Laptop for system type.
# Make a note of anything special or any problems you encountered that weren't corrected and should be disclosed.
# Reference the whiteboard for what to write in the "notes" section (All but battery check)
# Print a pdf to the Desktop. Call it something like "BUILD" or "BUILD PRINTME"
|-
|Test the battery ||

Step 1.
Make sure battery is fully charged:
* Battery icon missing indicates full charge.
:If fully charged, then move to Step 2.
:If not fully charged, then move to Step 3.

Step 2.
* Put a music CD in the optical drive to put a power draw on the laptop:
* Select "Repeat"
* Start playing the CD
* Open a terminal and run batterytest. If you have already run a battery test and need to restart one, you must first remove the file "bat_mon" by typing rm bat_mon
* Disconnect the power supply and place the laptop on the waiting rack. If it shuts down when unplugged, the battery is bad and you'll need to search for another battery (can't find one? check in with your instructor).
* Mark on the Keeper label that Build is complete, the Charging check has been completed and that you've started Bat Check.
*If you want to see for how many minutes bat check has run, open up another terminal and type watch wc bat_mon. Laptop Power %26 Batteries can provide additional information.

{|fontsize="14" border=".05" fontweight="bold" cellpadding=".5" width="100%"
|-
|align="left" padding=".5"|The evaluation should have been completed to reach Build. Work through each step as well as you can, and ask if you have questions. Try and learn the reason for each of the steps. This knowledge will come in handy later on when, inevitably, things aren't going as smoothly. Your instructor will be able to answer questions and check your work. Never overlook the help that the builder to your right or left might be able to lend. You can also find information on the Free Geek wiki at Laptops. Check with your instructor to find out what type of box to build, then work your way down this checklist.
{|fontsize="12" cellpadding=".5" border=".05" font-weight="bold" cellpadding=".7"
|-
|width="25%" align="center"|STEPS
|width="75%" align="center"|NOTES AND DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS
|-
| Check For Broken or Damaged Parts || Visually inspect laptop for broken screen, missing keys, weak hinges, cosmetic problems, etc.
|-
| Power Up Laptop||
|-
| Enter BIOS || If you see an error message like "checksum error, defaults loaded" then your CMOS battery is dead.
|-
| Test CD/DVD writing ||
Step 1.
* On Battery Power tab - set default to "Blank screen" when laptop lid is closed.
* Also, set default to "Shutdown" when battery power is critically low. (This is in preparation for Battery Test)
Step 2.
* General tab - set default to "Always display an icon.
Step 3.
* On AC Power tab - set default to "Blank screen" when laptop lid is closed.
|-
|Test the battery ||

Step 1.
Make sure battery is fully charged:
* Battery icon missing indicates full charge.
:If fully charged, then move to Step 2.
:If not fully charged, then move to Step 3.

Step 2.
* Put a music CD in the optical drive to put a power draw on the laptop:
* Select "Repeat"
* Start playing the CD

Step 3.
If the charge is not complete:
* Mark the keeper label Build started and completed
* Make sure the keeper label Charging started box is checked.
* Place the laptop on the waiting rack, plug it back in and let it complete Charging.
* Leave a note indicating charging is in progress.

What to do for Volunteer Injuries
If someone is injured, we need to do several things. Note: this is to be taken as an additive to what is taught in the first aid class at the Red Cross.

* Assess the situation. Does the volunteer need professional medical attention?
* Give First Aid treatment if certified, or find someone who is!
* Offer to call an ambulance (person needs to say yes/no)
* Grab the red Volunteer ER folder (top drawer: Volunteer Desk)
*Fill out page 1 (Section A & B) of the Special Risk Accident Claim Form located in the RED folder.
* If the injured volunteer is a Multnomah County Community Service ("CS") Volunteer, use the specifically designated forms in the red folder and follow the procedure for Multnomah County CS volunteers below.
** Staff completes section A & signs
** Injured Volunteer completes section B & signs @ bottom (section C is optional)
* Make a copy of the 1st page of the form
** Send Volunteer for treatment with copy of 1st page AND Volunteer ER Card from RED folder
** The Volunteer ER card (same info @ top of form) provides the hospital with info to verify Volunteer Coverage
** Place original, completed form in Sarah's inbox for processing/filing
*Use the info from the form to create a ticket in the "Incident Reports" queue in RT

The Volunteer ER cards are located in the RED folders. The file is here: Dead trees#Office

IMPORTANT!!
* Volunteers are now covered by our Volunteer Accident Policy as of September 18, 2009, NOT Workers' Compensation.
* There is a DIFFERENT FORM for "Accidental Death of a Volunteer" (located within red folder)
* There is a DIFFERENT FORM for "Accidental Dismemberment/Paralysis of a Volunteer" (located within red folder)

Multnomah County CS Volunteers
Free Geek has a signed agreement with Multnomah County that says we will:

a. Ensure that the proper medical care is provided by providing on-site first aid and if deemed necessary summon medical assistance when appropriate;

b. remind the volunteer to contact the Multnomah County CS Program within one working day to complete the insurance paperwork;

c. notify the Multnomah County CS Program within one working day of the injury; and

d. write a summary of the accident which will include: 1) name of the volunteer; 2) description of the accident; 3) name of witness(es); and, 4) date, time, and location of the accident.

What to do for Employee Injuries
If someone is injured, we need to do several things. Note: this is to be taken as an additive to what is taught in the first aid class at the Red Cross.
* Assess the situation. Does the employee need professional medical attention?
* Give First Aid treatment if certified, or find someone who is!
* Offer to call an ambulance (person needs to say yes/no)
* Ask them for current phone number to reach them for follow-up (and questions).
* Give employee an "Employee Emergency Injury Info" card, whether or not they decide to seek treatment.

The Employee ER cards are located in the BLUE folder at the Volunteer Desk. The file is here:

* Send employee for treatment (via ambulance, other ride, parent, etc.)
** If they refuse, still hand them the info card should they seek treatment later.
* Fill out an Incident Report located in the BLUE folder (top drawer of Volunteer Desk)
* ALSO, use this same info to create a ticket in the "Incident Reports" queue in RT, or emailing staff (if you dont have a rt account)
* Give this form to Sarah or Richard to fax to Kristi, our claims contact via JD Fulwiler
IMPORTANT!!
* Employees are covered by our Worker's Compensation Insurance, NOT our General Liability Insurance.

What to do for Customer/Donor Injuries or Incidents
If a donor or customer is injured or incurs damage to their property (i.e. cart hits car), this is a General Liability situation. Note: this is to be taken as an additive to what is taught in the first aid class at the Red Cross.

* Assess the situation. Does the individual need professional medical attention?
* Give First Aid treatment if certified, or find someone who is!
* Offer to call an ambulance if the situation warrants (person needs to say yes/no)

Collect from injured party or damaged property owner:
*Full Name
*Full Address
*Phone numbers
* As much detail as possible about events, property involved, etc.
*Write down their version of events and read it back to them, later note this info in RT under "Incident Reports"
* After their departure, collect eye witness info from staff/volunteers in the area of, or involved in, the incident
* Give the injured party, or owner of damaged property, a business card and a specific staff contact. Sarah & staff dealing with incident are the best choices. Let Sarah know you did this.

IMPORTANT!!
* There are no forms to fill out or ER cards to disperse: Document incident on paper and in RT, convey to Sarah, give person a business card with specific staff contacts.
* Customers/Visitors and their property, if we are found liable, are covered under our General Liability Insurance.
* Sarah will follow-up with individual and if treatment/compensation is sought, Sarah will pursue compensation or report with General Liability Insurance.

What to document in RT
*Name of person
*Date of Injury/Incident
*Type of Injury/Incident
*Action required
*Actions completed
*Full contact info: Address & Phone numbers
What OSHA says
Every employer who is subject to OSHA and has more than 10 employees is required to maintain records relating to employee injuries and illness. This illness and injury log may be kept on a form developed by OSHA, known as Forms 300 and 300A log and summary. Although the records are generally not filed with OSHA, they must be maintained at the worksite for a five-year period and made available to employees and OSHA inspectors.
Required log entries must be made within seven days.
OSHA defines recordable data as any new, work-related injury or illness which also meets one or more of the following conditions:

* Death or loss of consciousness
* Results in one or more days away from work
* Restricted work activity or job transfer
* Requires medical treatment beyond first aid, or
* Is a recordable condition listed in a regulatory supplement
