These are ideas and brainstorming about implementing a 'Free Geek' type program in the current RE-Sources / RE-lectronics program.


Employment

Assistant to the Program Director, position

  • Starting part-time, 20 hr/week, $25-$30/hr
  • Additional wage funding by matching funds with value % of generated grants and donations.
  • Acts by direction to work as proxy for the Program Director
  • Coordinates with Program Director on activities in RE-lectronics
    • Helps with generating increased grants, donations, volunteers, and sponsorships.
    • Works on grant funding
    • Volunteer direction
    • Filling in for other volunteers, projects, and tasks.
  • Brainstorms about methods of streamlining donation and recovery processes
  • Assistance with other RE-Sources Information Technology needs.

Brainstorms

Vision
  • Optimize turnaround time for donations and recovery.
  • Minimize 'on the shelf' time for equipment.
  • Determine difference between 'junk' and 'valuable'.
  • Determine how much invested time/labor for effective cost recovery.
Donations
  • Work with local vendors to include a 'RE-lectronics' flyer, with every purchase, encourage recylcing of older parts.

    • Curuit City
    • Best Buy
    • CostCo
    • Mail-order w/Recovery fee ? (i.e. advertise on E-bay to receive outdated equipment, +$15 per item, they pay S/H)


Develop list of locations for outstream of 'low end'/inexpensive equipment
    • Ebay ?
    • low-income households
    • "Public Technology Centers"
      • (i.e. RE-Threads, Mission,) (Could be word processing, or internet cafe style)
Work with local schools to capture surplus items
  • WWU, WCC, BTC, Public School


Receiving
  • Everything tagged and date when arrive
Inventory / Tracking
  • Use database
  • Tag everything unique and 'valuable' (i.e. PC's,printers, but not screws or power cords)
  • Monthly Reports (# of Units, and aprox poundage)
Organization / workflow
  • determine distinct workflow areas
  • specific steps when moving items from one area to the next
  • Specific people 'watchdog' workflow areas, to minimize 'pile up' or 'back-log'
Selling (with signed affidate to recycle parts again)
  • Ebay - valuable items
  • RE-Store
