Unusual Form Letters

Sometimes we want help from folks who are doing their own weird, wonderful thing, but we don't exactly speak the same language. Don't worry about it; most of them don't speak Geek, and really, half of all Americans barely speak English, so it's all cool.

Speaking Forsoothly

This is simpler than it sounds. There's a wonderful web page devoted to how to speak proper medieval English; but it can make the head swim if you read through it all at once.

All you need to know: Expand your language. Capitalize correctly. Forego contractions.

In other words, don't go overboard, but remember "I do not" sounds more 'in period' than "I don't", f'rinstance. Ditch the modern slang; they hear that every day, and folks in the SCA, in Amtgard, ECS and other fantasy-based and medieval-based recreation societies will appreciate any effort, really. Be polite and respectful, and you'll do just fine.

Obviously, when talking about our technocrat-based charity, we can't just lump it all under "travelers from Byzantium" and go from there. But a few words here and there, properly said, is the same as knowing how to say a few words in some common non-English languages--a little effort goes a long way.
