New Questions

For us to be able to determine whether to allow you to use the Free Geek name, we need to know if your organization is non-heirarchical and democratically-run (link to some relevant documentation of what this means). The following questions are intended first and foremost to help us understand how your organization is run and the culture and feel of the place so we can help you. They're also a good exercise for you, especially if you don't have much experience working with democratically-run workplaces, to figure out what such an organization looks like.

  • Who signed (or will sign) the following documents (if you have or are applying for them)?
    • lease for space. Currently no Lease contract for our space.
    • articles of incorporation: JC Armbruster
    • bank account: JC Armbruster, Jim Gerner, Timothy Hitchkock
    • bylaws: None currently, initial real "Board of Directors"
    • loan: Signer authorized by Board of Directors
    • foundation grant application: Board of directors.
  • Describe your role in the organization.
  • Who is (or will be) answering questions from the general public? Any members, hopefully a first staff member will be hired shortly.
  • Describe how your decision making process will change as you grow? We will need more committees and subgroups to handle tasks rather then making them as a whole group.
  • How many people do you anticipate will be on your paid staff? 3.
  • Which will you be using to make decisions, formal consensus or majority rule or some other process? Formal Consensus.
    • Why? Group decision making that involves all members in a unanimous decision enusres that actions taken by the group are amenable to all parties present.
  • How do you determine who will be in your main decision making group? Involvement and particpation is currently all that required. In the future the board of directors will also provide decisions but the power will be in a council open to all those who show that they are willing to take the responsibilities of particpation.
  • Do you have experienced meeting facilitators working with your group? If not, how will you recruit them? Yes.
  • What is your mission statement?

Free Geek Olympia is not-for profit organization that reuses and recycles computer technology to beneift the South Sound Community [need exact copy]

  • How do you encourage volunteer participation?

Word of mouth, fliers.
