Testing optical drives with K3B:

  1. Start K3b by double clicking on its icon on the desktop and wait for the program to start.
  2. Click on 'New Data Project' on the welcome screen.
  3. On the left side of the window right click on the Test1 folder and select 'Add to project' or you can click and drag the folder into the 'Current Projects' area.
  4. Click 'Burn' in the Current Projects' area and a new 'Data Project' window will open, make sure that 'Verify Written Data' is selected under 'Settings'('Remove Image' will also be selected, but should be greyed out) and then click 'Burn' at the bottom.
  5. K3b will begin to write the "Test1' folder to the disc, it will start by clearing existing data from the disc and then it will automatically start writing to the disc.
  6. If there are not any errors the disc should eject when it is finished and K3b will let you know that the burn was successful. If there are any errors with the drive being tested K3b should stop the burn process and inform you of the error.
  7. Label the drive if it's good, remove the disc and recycle the drive if it's bad.
