Seven stages

There are seven stages that gizmos might go through at Free Geek. If we can identify where each process happens, who is qualified to do it, and how it is done, we will have a clearer understanding of how Free Geek can operate.

Gizmo Flow Processes
Receiving
The gizmo arrives in the form of a donation, is identified, and may be entered into the database.
Triage
It is determined if it is worth keeping the gizmo for potential reuse or not, given the time and effort and other constraints needed to make it useful.
Testing
The gizmo is tested to see if it is functional.
Storage
The gizmo is awaiting reuse.
Culling
The gizmo is pulled from storage because the triage criteria has changed.
Reuse
The gizmo is refurbished and put back into use through sale, adoption, etc.
Recycling
The gizmo is demanufactured and separated into its component parts.

Check the image to see which way gizmos should flow through the processes. For clarity of process, gizmos should not normally flow backwards. That is, for example, a monitor that fails in burn in testing should not be brought back to receiving for processing.

Monitors as an example

Detailed information on processing monitors.

Receiving

  • Where -- performed in Basic Intake
  • Who -- typically by adopters
  • How -- entered into the database as Monitor with one ID label on the front (not on the glass).

Triage

  • Where -- performed in Basic Intake
  • Who -- typically by adopters
  • How -- those manufactured before 1996 are recycled.

Testing

  • Where -- performed in the warehouse at Monitor Burn In
  • Who -- by adopters and core volunteers
  • How -- surplus 15" and under are recycled, burn in for 1 hour and compare colors and fuzziness of text to a reference monitor.

Storage

  • Where -- in the warehouse on the Monitor Shelves
  • Who -- by adopters and core volunteers
  • How -- one deep on shelf with gizmo ID tag facing out.

Culling

  • Where -- in the warehouse on the Monitor Shelves
  • Who -- by core volunteers and staff
  • How -- when shelves are full, those without bases or with other blemishes are recycled.

Reuse

  • Where -- in the Thrift Store, in Infrastructure throughout the building, via Build through the adoption and grants programs
  • Who -- by build volunteers, core volunteers, and staff
  • How -- packaged with FreekBoxen or GrantBoxen for adoption or hardware grants, or placed in the store for sale to the public.

Recycling

  • Where -- in the Monitor Recycling pile in the warehouse
  • Who -- by adopters and core volunteers
  • How -- video cord is clipped off, monitors are placed in gaylord and sent to Total Reclaim for processing.
