Salary/Benefits
  • Salary is $30,000 per year.
  • 3.6 weeks paid time off per year (combined vacation and sick time, based on an assumed 37 hours work week).

Work Hours
  • Four and a half to five days per week, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30am to 7:30pm, some evening or morning meetings, with some flexibility.

(This is a combination of the original sales coordinator job and the exploratory job that came after and was turned into a coordinator position.)

Job Description:

  • Evaluate existing store layout and suggest improvements.
  • Stock and organize shelves
  • Optimize sales item visibility
  • Run the till, make sales, answer customers' questions, channel customer complaints to proper avenues.
  • Coordinate volunteers in performing daily tasks
  • Communicate with other Free Geek staff and volunteers, especially those involved in testing and production, about needs of the Thrift Store.
  • Help keep thift store in line with FREE GEEK philosophy and capabilities. Be aware of FREE GEEK programs.
  • Document, document, document!
  • getting items into (and out of) the store based on FREE GEEK policy
  • find volunteers who are qualified to evaluate "big ticket" hardware that may be for sale and get them to evaluate hardware
  • attempting to find buyers for items that might not be easy to sell in the store
  • make sure that the store is staffed with volunteers regularly, and that schedules and job lists are posted
  • maintain a short list of items that can be advertised in the newsletter and elsewhere
  • make certain that items in the store are priced consistently
  • develop documentation, policies and procedures for the store and sales in general
  • coordinate with other FREE GEEK staff

The job is to coordinate and empower FREE GEEK volunteers to do this work as much as possible.

Required skills/qualities

  • an understanding of FREE GEEK
  • an ability to work for the measly wages we're talking about
  • an ability to learn about (or prior knowledge of) a variety of hardware and the communities of people who purchase it
  • can work with people


Required Skills:

  • Capable of improving our ability to organize, display, and label items for sale in a professional manner.
  • Good customer relation skills
  • High level of patience
  • Ability to work unsupervised and self motivated
  • Organizational skills
  • Ability to work in an informal, friendly environment with a diverse staff
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 40 lbs

Pluses:

  • Marketing or sales background a plus
  • Basic knowledge of free and open source software

In Addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress in a somewhat chaotic setting and maintain a positive attitude. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions but will be able to work on projects almost entirely without supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
