manufacturers marked in '''bold''' have known working Linux drivers.  Of those, only Lucent/Agere and PCTel are currently shipped by FreeGeek.  The ESS modems were taken to the store; after doing some research I discovered that the both the Smartlink and all four Motorola modems are supported by the Smartlink driver (a.k.a. "slmodem").  More work will be required to confirm this and to see how this might work at Freegeek.
