we want an Outreach Coordinator to be a PR/advertising/marketing person.

  • create a flexible, long-term strategy for pimping FG
    • this will help pave the way to a capital campaign for the purchase of new building
    • there are a few big unknowns, so we need to be able to adjust to new realities as they are sprung on us (think e-waste legislation)
  • create a media kit
    • compiling FG stats, e.g. master list of hardware grants (how many grants we give out, to which types of organizations (educational, homeless, environment, churches, etc.), how much money the granted hardware is worth in Thrift Store $). Using these stats for creating fact sheets about free geek.
  • fostering community partnerships
  • coordinate and train a group of volunteers for outreach opportunities (tabling, speaking, presentations, etc.)
  • responsibilities also include a few floor shifts a week
  • could create tracking system for how volunteers hear of FG, where they come from
  • would assist with organizing events like Prom, Geek Fair, Holiday Party
  • work with other collective members, dovetailing outreach needs with all Free Geek programs
    • i.e. help production people outreach to businesses for gizmo donations that match our needs
    • help build and adoption program attract appropriate volunteers
    • help the store design advertising campaigns
  • (Every job should have this line -->) Develop a group of volunteers to share in the work associated with accomplishing these tasks (esp. rote work)

Experience

  • background in outreach and/or marketing
  • has created media kits
  • written press releases & done publicity stuff
  • grantwriting experience preference

What are the goals of Outreach?

What are the Free Geek's outreach goals? And how will this position help fill them? Well, some would include:

  • Improving the brand recognition of Free Geek in Portland and elsewhere
  • Drive new business to the store
  • Drive new volunteers to FG
  • Drive new institutional recycling contracts to free geek (make presentations at colleges, corporations, etc.)
  • Lay some groundwork for annual campaign
  • Pursue grants to acheive the aforementioned
