That's hard to say. I am working on a project that has been a black hole. But the other Black hole has some potential as does the white hole.we also have an opportunity to make some money from homestreet at the completion of this project if we do things right.

redirect volunteers into more fulfilling work.
What parts of your job are necessary for Free Geek to meet its mission? How so?

Dave

Build refurbishes the systems that are the currency for our volunteer labor. They are also the systems that go into the hands of people and groups that need them. We don't do much 'reduce' but we are 'reuse'.

Geiner

The reuse part mostly, but also the recycling part.

Jhasen

My job is about half of Free Geek's mission. RECYCLE E-WASTE. I also do a fair amount of PR and I give a great tour.

Jon

Keeping flow of incoming materials going proper direction.

Teaching people how to test equipment

Helping maintain testing equipment and getting it repaired or replaced when needed.

Large doantion and organizing as gizmos get processed.

Kathie

Meeting greeting/scheduling vol+adopters -- addressing and handling these people's concerns, teaching data entry. PR with all who come to front desk.

Laurel

Any education we do in exchange for community service is explicityly fulfilling the mission. The adoption classes are also important to reuse goals.

There may be a tendency to subjectively judge each staff member's job performance and perhaps some of that is ineveitable, but we should try to make this as objective as possible. For instance, one measuring stick (and it's just one thing to look at) is the types of jobs that a given staff member can do or could easily learn.

Those people able to do many of the jobs and those people who are the only ones who can do a necessary job might be considered more essential to the operation of Free Geek. Of course, we should also keep in mind how easy or hard it would be to train someone into a job.

As a tool, we could make a grid showing who can do what.

Free Geek has several jobs that have to be done at a given time and place to keep the programs and facility running. Here's a list of current staff members and the work they do a lot of, some of, have done in the past, or could learn:

Key
  • 5 -- A main part of current job
  • 4 -- Part of current job
  • 3 -- Used to do / Fills in occasionally
  • 2 -- Easy to learn in < 1 month
  • 1 -- Hard to learn in < 1 month
  • 0 -- Not practical

(Finish this and check it for accuracy)

There are other jobs that are also important in that they support operations of our programs, but aren't directly tied to a program (and often can be done on a more flexible schedule). If we can agree about which of these jobs are essential, we could make a similar grid for those jobs.
