A place to discuss design considerations in the design of a new POS/Cashier desk.
Behind-the-counter concerns
What do we want things to look like while we're in the hot seat?
- CC machine
- Telephone
- Store Documents
- New User Guide
- Warranties
- trash
- recycling
- printer
- "the stamp*
- The "Peacemaker" (a.k.a. "Ol' Hick'ry")
Things each terminal needs
- Two computer systems (one diskless, one stand-alone, on KVM)
- Keyboard/Mouse
- LCD Monitor
- Stapler
- Pens
- A till
Things we need access to, but don't need to be "right there" at all times
- stickers
- books
- foam for CPUs
- Ker-chunker and slips
- Gift certificates
- Supplies
- staples, pens, tape, other credenza kinda stuff
- Stereo
- Shirts
Customer-side concerns
- Place to set large items without hoisting to full height of counter
- Bags
- Return Policy sign
- Ubuntu disks and other shwag
- Place for rotating signs (closed on....etc.)
- Clear place to queue up
- Place to go once transaction is over
- Not inviting to "come on back" behind the counter
Things that just plain suck about current setup
The printer and cc machine are too low, I think.Tonyc There's no good place for trash/recyclingTonyc It's hard for a person to get to glass case while someone is at the right terminalTonyc
