Tuesdays at 3pm, to-be-recycled laptop parts are made available for sale through the store for an hour, before they are taken back to the warehouse for recycling. (The first day of this will be July 14, 2009 and will actually happen at 4pm. Future events will be at 3. sorry for the confusion).

"Scraptop" is the affectionate term for a parts laptop. Sometimes the "S" is omitted.

Background

Initially, these were sold out of the warehouse as part of Safari, but it quickly became too much like Thunderdome, with people throwing elbows and kicking out crutches and pushing over small children. Sales staff of the future, N.B.: This is a horrible idea, and should not be repeated.

Once we realized the potential market for these, though, we started offering them up in the store, for $5-20 each, and they've proven quite popular.

In 2010, we sold 1596 of these suckas, totaling almost $10,000. The totals were likely more than this, as we didn't establish the db category until February.

We frequently saw a rush of people at opening, running and jockeying for position to get to the new stock. For safety concerns and our own sanity, we began a system of randomized stocking, only putting new scraptops out for sale when there was nobody present who was interested in them (they're the same regulars who buy all these things!). Now things are flowing smoothly.

Policy

They're as-is. That's it.
