A Free Geek Boot Camp is a proposed step in the startup process. Core members of an emerging Free Geek would be either required or encouraged to come to an existing Free Geek and participate in intense learning activities that would help them establish their chapter.
Maybe it could last two weeks. It would be good if we could get this funded.
Work Areas
Sometimes the best way to understand how an activity fits in to the big picture is to participate in it. It would be good for an attendee to spend some time in the following jobs:
(a brainstorm)
- Receiving
- Prebuild
- Build
- Production Coordination
- Advanced Testing
- Recycling
- Thrift Store
- Front Desk donations
- Front Desk volunteers
- Monitor testing
- Printer evaluation and deconstruction
- Hardware Grants
- Adoption Class
Meetings, tutorings, classes
We would also want to spell some things out more formally. Here are a list of subjects that ought to be covered:
(a brainstorm)
- Volunteer management
- Vendor selection and vendor relations
- Meetings (consensus, democracy, transparency, etc.)
- History lesson
- Standard tour of Free Geek
- Bookkeeping
- Budgeting
- Business plan development
- Grant writing
- Free Geek Principles
- Non-profit set up (legal forms, etc.)
