There are three steps to getting a book in the system. All of them require being logged in with an acount that has admin powers. If you need admin powers, contact bookworms to find someone who can give them to you.

We are currently cataloguing the O'Reilly section.

Logging in

The login link is not obvious. Go to [this page], which can be accessed via the "Free Geek Library" bookmark on the library terminal browser.

Cataloging

Note: If labels have been printed, please do not catalog more books that day.

  1. Search our library for the book.
Go to the Cataloging tab. If you don't see "Search Bibliography by Search Phrase:", click on Bibliography search on the left. Enter key words from the title in the "Search Bibliography by Search Phrase:" and search.
    • If there are no results, go to step 2 to search by ISBN.
    • If there are results, the book may already exist in the bibliography. (We may have another copy or the record was created before for some reason.) Look at the list and determine if any of them are the book. If not, go to step 2.
    • If you do find the book info on the list, click the title of the book.
    • Below the book information on the next page, click Add new copy.
    • Go to step 3.
  2. Search the Library of Congress by ISBN
If it doesn't already exist in the bibliography, click Z39.50 Search (on the left side).
    • Enter the ISBN of the book. You can either type it in, or use the barcode scanner. The scanner can be a little touchy, but if you get the hang of it (and there aren't tags covering the barcode), it's more efficient. If you type it in, you have to press Enter or click the search button on the screen.
    • If it doesn't return book information, put the book on the PROBLEMS CATALOGING shelf and go back to step 1 with another book.
    • If you get results, doublecheck the information.
    • If the information is wrong, put the book on the PROBLEMS CATALOGING shelf and go back to step 1 with another book.
    • If the information is correct, click submit.
  3. Click the "Autogenerate" checkbox and then click submit.
  4. Put the book on the IN PROCESS shelf.

Deleting a cataloged book

    • From home select "cataloging".
    • keyin the book title on bibliography screen and click search.

Label printing

Note: Print as the last thing you do, because we're finding the records by date. Do not catalog more books after printing.

  1. The labels print on avery 5962, which prints 14 to a sheet. (Same as Recycle labels)
  2. Go to Reports, Copy Search.
  3. Enter the date of the day after the last time labels were printed.
  4. Double-check the results against the books on the IN PROCESS shelf to make sure you got them all.
  5. Click Labels on the left hand side.
    • If the label sheet you're going to use has labels missing, use the "Skip labels" option to determine where on the label sheet it should start printing (since you'll be doing partial sheets). The labels are counted
1 2
3 4
5 6
etc.
  1. The labels will open as a PDF; make sure the right labels are in the printer and print them.
  2. Put the labels on the books with as much of the LOC # showing on the spine as possible. If the books are too skinny, put the label on the back. Put labelled books on the TO BE SHELVED shelf.

Shelving

  1. Books on the TO BE SHELVED shelf may either be just catalogued or just returned/checked in.
  2. Shelve the book. We'll shelve according to call number.
  3. Since the books may be just catalogued, you may need to move books around to make room on the shelf for it.
  4. Put books on the shelf per first 6 catalog sysmbols and last 4 or more sysmbols. i.e. cataloge number of qa76.73.J38/O247 would be shelved after number QA76.73/O246. note that the J38 maybe handwritten on some of the labels but isn't used in establishing shelving order.
