We'll be looking for someone who can come to a program that works and make it something new and better. At the same time, she or he will need to be able to work within the culture and limitations (and with the unique strengths) of Free Geek and volunteerism. She or he should also be dedicated to our mission and ready to jump into a democratic workplace. An ideal candiate will have some experience in program development (or, alternately, curriculum development) and sensitivity to the needs of volunteers. Her previous coworkers should have a sneaking suspicion that she is secretly a superhero.
And one has to have a sense of humor to work here or it just isn't gonna work.
In addition the Generic staffer participates in general Free Geek operations, substituting for other collective members and filling in where needed. He/She also cross trains other collective members so that they will be able to cover gaps in the generic program.
This is a job in a worker collective. Your first three to six months will be as a provisional member of the collective. At the end of that time our decision whether or not to bring you on as a permanent collective member will be made through a peer review process.
Specific duties:
- Stuff dey do for their special job
- Probly want to include Document, document, document! or Delegate, delegate, delegate! or at least Dilute! Dilute! OK!
- All staff here are volunteer coordinators of some sort or another.
- Attend meetings as necessary.
- Learn procedures for other parts of Free Geek and fill in as necessary.
- Participate in collective management structure.
Required skills:
- Special fancy skills dey need for their special job
- Able to lift 50-1000 lbs. of pure geek brainpower
- Basic computer knowledge, use of web browser, email and word processor, database and spreadsheet.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to work in a consensus decision making process related to staff and policy issues.
- Patient and courteous with the public.
- Ability to work with and coordinate volunteers with a wide range of skills and experience.
- Able to work in an informal, friendly environment with a diverse staff
- Work well under stress in an unusual setting, maintaining a positive attitude even in the face of adversity
- Not afraid to ask questions, but able to work on projects almost entirely without supervision
- Able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes
