Special mining is done in Eval 2. It is intended for systems that would otherwise be recycled. That is, if a system is a keeper, use the regular mining process -- not this special mining process.

Currently, the systems that are special mined are those that have 3 digit ZIF sockets, but have processor speeds less than 500 MHz. This includes those with 3 digit ZIF sockets and no processors.

  • Remove all the cards that regular mining would have you remove.
  • Remove the hard drive.
    • Be sure to leave drive rails with the system.
  • Remove the CD Drive and floppy drive (unless they are proprietarily built into the case).
    • Be sure to leave drive rails with the system.

What to do with the motherboard

Low end motherboards
If the motherboard has more than one ISA slot, leave it in the machine, mark the case with a recycle sticker (circle "< 500 MHz") and put it in the Rejects pile for Eval 1 to process.
Proprietary motherboards
If the motherboard has more than a riser in it (so the cards go in sideways), or if the system is a Compaq or HP leave the motherboard in the machine, mark the case with a recycle sticker (circle "< 500 MHz") and put it in the Rejects pile for Eval 1 to process.
Standard, higher end systems
Otherwise, remove the motherboard (and take to advanced testing).

What to do with the case (if the motherboard has been removed)

Standard complete cases
If the case is a standard, non-name-brand case with all its side panels, etc., label it with a HOLD FOR STORE sticker and put it on the cart. No paperwork is necessary.
Other Cases
Otherwise put a recycle sticker on it (circle "No Motherboard") and put it in the Rejects pile for Eval 1 to process. (This will be a very easy job for Eval 1.)
