Before we can drop off non-rechargeable batteries at Metro, we need to sort them. This should happen regularly, since batteries accumulate fast, and it can be a daunting task to sort multiple buckets of these little buggers. Please wear gloves when doing this task!

These are the different types, and how you can identify them:

  • Type: Alkaline
    • Identification: Alkaline, Mercury Free or 0% Mercury, Dry
  • Type: Nickel Metal Hydride
    • Identification: NI-MH
  • Type: Nickel Cadmium
    • Identification: NI-Cad
  • Type: Lithium
    • Identification: Lithium
  • Type: Button cells
    • Identification: little round batteries off of motherboards. All of them can go together, eventhough they come in different types.
  • Type: Lead Acid
    • Identification: Lead (Most likely this is a rechargeable battery and should go to RBRC.

We have marked containers for these on a shelf in UPS land. If you are not sure what type of battery you have, please leave it in the container unknown, or ask one of the Recycling Coordinators.
