For systems that are sent to either System Eval 2 or Legacy System Eval, volunteers working in System Eval 1 should unplug the cable leading to the hard drive. One of the instructions in both System Eval 2 and Legacy System Eval requires a volunteer to power up the system. This potentially conflicts with Free Geek's policy of not compromising any user data or never booting from a donated user's hard disk should the volunteer not power down the machine in time.

Disabling the hard drive will reduce the probability of an unseasoned volunteer accidentally booting the system when determining the processor speed. This also helps emphasize to new volunteers in the build program how careful we are about protecting the privacy of those kind enough to donate their computers.

Other alternatives include the following:
- Supplying Legacy System Eval and System Eval 2 with software to wipe system hard drives
- Adding instructions to unplug the hard drive to Legacy Eval and System Eval 2
