Job Title: Component Testing Intern
Hours Weekly: 12 to 30 hours/week
Days Per Week: 3 to 5 days/week
Length of Internship: Minimum 2 months
Training: Orientation and Training Provided
Free Geek Supervisor: Receiving coordinator

Responsibilities

  • Organize and make sure 4-5 testing stations are in working order.
   * Greet volunteers and make them feel comfortable working at Free Geek
   * Teach volunteers to operate testing stations.
   * Work proactively to make sure enough material is flowing in and out of testing
   * Upgrade documentation for testing stations.
   * Intern will not have to know all the technical problems that may arise, but must know who to ask to get the full answers.
   * This internship has the option of a more technically-oriented course for those more knowledgable of BIOS, hardware, and troubleshooting, and a more people-oriented course for those with less computer knowledge.

Desired Qualifications

  • While some knowledge of computers and coding is desired, in the case of a people-oriented internship, a commitment to teaching, process, and the comfort of our volunteers is more important than computer and coding knowledge.
   * Familiarity with hardware and comfort with BIOS are plusses.
   * Enjoy troubleshooting.
   * Understanding of Free Geek and Open Source philphy.
   * Aptitude for learning detailed, complex tasks and protocols.
   * Good listener.

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects with minimal supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
