Truck Evaluation

Free Geek is in possession of a 1990 Izuzu Trooper, 4 door, 6 cylinder sport utility vehicle, that was donated by David Pool. The truck is in good working order and is safe to drive. The truck has just over 118,000 miles on it. While the truck drives well, it does have some mechanical issues that preclude using it for freeway travel. The vehicle is gasoline powered and get poor gas mileage (less than 15 mpg).

Option One: Sell

Put money towards other equipment costs (i.e. forklift/pallet jacks/truck).

Kelly Blue Book rates it at $1,370.00, I estimate the actual resale value at around $1,500.00.

Option Two: Pickup Operation

Onetime Costs:

Title: $55

Ongoing Vehicle Costs:

  • Insurance: $960/yr ($80/mo) – quote from American Family Insurance
  • Fuel: $2,400/yr ($200/mo) – based on 1,000 miles per month, fuel cost of $3/gal. @ 15 mpg
  • Maintenance: $652/yr ($54/mo) – based on Bikes at Work vehicle cost calculator
  • License and Fees: Registration = $50/yr ($4/mo)

Total: $4,062/yr ($338.50/mo)

Monthly Staff Costs: $15/hr – 2 hours per pick up, $180/month @ 6 per month

Total Monthly Operating Costs: $518.50/mo

Potential Income:

  • Maximum Pickup: 40 systems or 15 (17”) monitors
  • Pickup Fees: $75.00 pickup + $0.75 mile (monitor fees extra, not included as vehicle income)
  • Average: $90/pickup, need to do min. 6 per month ($540/mo) to justify.
