Job Title: Linux Class Teaching Internship
Hours Weekly: 2-4
Days Per Week: 1-2
Length of Internship: Minimum 6 months
Training: Orientation and Training Provided
Free Geek Supervisor: Education Outreach Coordinator

Responsibilities

  • Set up computers and peripherals for each student in the class
  • Teach students of varying experience and ability basic computer skills
  • Give students an orientation to the Ubuntu GNOME desktop GUI
  • Teach students the basics on how to use Ubuntu including using the File Browser, using the gEdit text editor, key board hot-keys, using the Mozilla web browser, creating a gMail account, and using Evolution
  • Answer questions asked during class
  • Inform students about their options for tech support
  • Encourage students to take other available monthly classes
  • Clear out the classroom after classes

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic computer use
  • A high level of patience
  • An interest in teaching people from a range of backgrounds
  • A desire to work with people
  • Knowledge about GNU/Linux
  • Ability to lift a monitor
  • In addition: The ideal candidate will be able to work well in a fairly distracting environment and communicate concepts and the vocabulary necessary for understanding. The need for patience and kindness cannot be stressed enough!

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects with minimal supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
