Things to know when answering the phone

Hours

11 am - 7 pm Tuesday through Saturday.

Location

1731 SE 10th Ave, 2 blocks south of Hawthorne

Donations

Donations can be brought by any time we're open (leaving things when we are closed is illegal dumping). We cannot at this time pick up your donations.

We accept the donation of any computers, printers, telephones, fax machines, and office supplies, working or not. A $10 fee is required for monitors, and optional monetary donations are requested for other equipment dropped off.

Tax Receipts

FREE GEEK is a 501(c)3, so all donations are tax-deductible, except the monitor fee.

Volunteering

If you are interested in volunteering, please come down and take a tour. The tours happen every day we are open at noon and 6 pm.

24 hour Adoption program

Volunteers receive a computer after 24 hours of work. The computers all run the Linux operating system and are internet-capable. Volunteers receiving their computer can also take a class which will introduce them to basic computer use.

Build program

Volunteers in the build program go through a series of classes to familiarize them with computer hardware. They then put together 6 freekboxes of which they get to keep the 6th.

Tech support

We do have tech support for recipients of FreekBoxes. Hours currently are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday from 3 to 6 pm. We do not support non-FreekBoxes or former FreekBoxes that have had Windows installed, though we can reinstall Linux on former FreekBoxes if the person would like this. Tech support can also help with upgrades, such as configuring a new monitor or printer or adding RAM.

Classes

Aside from the introductory GettingStarted class, we have developed several classes for people at different levels of expertise. The schedule for these is constantly changing. For more information on classes, contact Michael or Liane.
