Program Basics

  • Program Name: The Almighty Baler
  • Program Description:

Bale everything (steel, plastic, cardboard) to turn into a commodity and earn more money

  • What best describes this program?
    1. Primarily income generating (expected to make money for Free Geek)
  • Why does Free Geek need this program?

Earn more money from material coming out of Recycling

Job Position Basics

  • Would there be a dedicated staff position associated with this program? YES
  • Position Title: Recycling Supervisor
  • Job Description:

The Recycling supervisor would operate the Baler as needed, as one of his/her job duties

Financial costs

  • What are the expected financial staffing costs of the program? (Include all costs to the organization such as salary, payroll taxes, and benefits.)

Would need to add staff hours to recycling.

  • What other costs are associated with the program? (Include costs of materials needed, etc.)

Would need a covered and fenced area, most likely 1/3 of parkinglot would be taken up. Balers need a ton of electricity to run. Noise level would be high, especially with steel baling. Also, because bales need a lot of material to be send through to make a bale, we might not be using it efficently, because of the volume of material recycled at Free Geek. Having a big machine sitting around partly unused will cost us money in rent, maintenance, training.

  • If there will be a dedicated staff position, how much time would be needed for training?
    • How much time would existing staff need to put in? ______10_____ hours @ $10.84 (?)
    • How time would existing volunteers need to put in? _______0_____ hours @
  • Once the program is up and running how many staff how many hours per week would it take?
    • In paid staff time? ______8______ hours/week @ $10.84
    • In volunteer time? _______8_____ hours/week @

Drawbacks

  • Outline the intangible costs for the position and program:

Building fencing and a roof, maintance, rent, loss of parkinglot, can the forklift handle a steel bale?, storage of bales until vendor pickup.

  • Are there any possible negative impacts on Free Geek's mission, and if so what?

No.

  • How will this program affect other programs and staff positions currently in effect?

Either increase staff hours in recycling by increasing weekly work hours, or take hours away from another program to staff baler time. Feeding the baler should not be done by a volunteer.

  • How will this program affect other programs and staff positions being considered?

If hours get diverted to baler time, other programs might loose hours in staff coverage.

Benefits

  • Would the program generate income? YES
    • If yes, how much income would be expected once the program is up and running? $ 600/ month maybe

Could be more if we had more material to recycle.

    • If yes, how long would it take for the program to get to that point? who knows
  • How does the program support the mission of Free Geek?

Recycling ewaste.

Measuring Success

  • How can the success of the program be measured?

Income in recycling actually goes up, after all other costs are deducted.

  • For most income generating positions, the costs initially outweigh the benefits. If this is an income generating program, how long until it is expected to break even?

Good Question.

  • Outline a plan for implementing the program:

I don't think Free Geek is at a point where such a machine would be efficent. We just don't get enough material.
