Original Note: Right now, this internship is only available to Computer Science/Studies students from local colleges and community colleges. If you're not coming to us through one of these programs, you're still welcome to be a Volunteer Builder, but we can't fill out any paperwork for you. Sorry about this. We're just a bit overwhelmed with applicants.

Job Title: Build Instructor/Assistant Intern
Hours Weekly: 4 to 30 hours/week
Days Per Week: 1 to 5 days/week
Length of Internship: Minimum 120 hours
Training: Orientation and Training Provided
Free Geek Supervisor: Dave or Martin, Co Build Coordinators

Responsibilities

  • Become part of the Build Program, working your way through card sorting, evaluation, high-end testing, assembly, software installation, quality control, and troubleshooting in order to familiarize yourself with Free Geek procedures, hardware, and software.
  • Eventually, be able to instruct build classes in tandem with a Build Coordinator (Assistant) or alone (Instructor), training volunteer builders in computer construction, Linux software installation, quality control, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with Build Program Coordinators on the development of the build program, including process development and documentation.
  • If necessary, work with Build Program Coordinators to cull and test special hardware.
  • Clean and organize the build area as necessary.
  • Be available for special projects as necessary.

Desired Qualifications

  • Understanding and interest in Free Geek and Open Source philosophy
  • Knowledge of Debian Linux and harware troubleshooting (although much of this knowledge may be acquired by participating in the Build Program).
  • Aptitude for learning detailed, complex tasks and protocols
  • College-aged or older
  • Good listener

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects with minimal supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
