HALP! I HAS NO INTERNETS!

blah...this page is not done.

Common problems:

The modem was just plugged in to another computer without being reset.

This happens if a user has more then one computer, or a gaming console, but no router. Cable modems will always lock on to whatever computer mac address they are plugged in to when turned on. Plugging the modem into a different machine without power cycling the modem will result in the modem still looking for the old machine to send packets.

The modem is not registered with the ISP properly

If the user recently ordered service, or hasnt paid there bill on time, the ISP may not have the modem authorized for usage. If this happpens the user will get redirected to a page asking them to (re)activate service. If this is happening, they will need to contact their ISP and register the modem. Some ISPs (comcast) will redirect Linux users to a page that simply says "Your operating system is not supported by comcast" with instructions to call a number.

Not getting an IP from router

Check network manager.

  • Not getting an IP from modem
  • Wireless is not working but wired is
  • Dial Up Related.
