A general person with emphasis on volunteer coordination skills. They'll have prebuild, tech support, front desk, build, and printer shifts.

Note: This person would begin by working, and teaching volunteers to work, in a large variety of places around Free Geek. He or she would also attend meetings and use creative thinking and communication skills to solve problems and bring plans to fruition. Eventually, the person we hire will show his or her aptitude for a specific area or two around Free Geek and we'll re-evaluate this job description at that time. We know this isn't your average job, and the person we hire will need to enjoy being flexible and changing with our extremely fluid organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Work, and teach volunteers to work, in most areas at Free Geek. This may include spending time teaching basic computer skills, teaching basic computer hardware identification, and covering the front desk, tech support, printers, advanced testing, and thrift store.
  • Actively identify operational problems and work with staff members, volunteer supervisors, and core volunteers to create and enact solutions
  • Recruit volunteers to do daily tasks
  • Document as necessary, which will be often
  • Proactively communicate issues as they arise

Required skills:

  • Proactive communication skills
  • Good writing/documentation skills
  • Able to analyze a problem, create the steps to fix it, and follow through on the plan that was created
  • Organized
  • Strong experience managing volunteers
  • Enjoy and have experience working with a variety of people
  • Aptitude for technical work
  • Experience using basic user-end computer programs like email, web browsers, word processors, etc.
  • Able to lift 25 lbs repeatedly, and 40 lbs. on occasion
  • Warehouse experience a plus
  • Able to multi-task
  • Enjoy working according to a consensus decision-making process related to staff and policy issues
  • Ability to work in an informal, friendly environment with a diverse staff
  • Dedication to Free Geek's mission and Open Source philosophies

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress in a somewhat chaotic setting and maintain a positive attitude. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions but will be able to work on projects almost entirely without supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
