This document no longer reflects Free Geek policy as of the council meeting of January 21st, 2009. Organizations wishing to use the Free Geek Trademark should refer to the wiki page ((insert reference)).

Policy

Proposed to Free Geek's Community Council on August 6, 2004 and approved by council on August 18, 2004.

Free Geek is a unique organization that inspires others around the world to practice their idealism in many different ways. One of those ways is to form an organization similar to Free Geek in their area. Because we frequently receive requests to use the Free Geek name, we have established this Trademark Fair Use Policy.

This policy defines the conditions under which an organization can use the Free Geek name or can claim affiliation with Free Geek. These conditions are defined as the Free Geek Principles.

Any organization that conforms to all of these Principles can use the Free Geek name. We suggest the form Free Geek location, where location is a unique abbreviation that identifies the area that they serve.

Organizations that conform to the essential Principles, but not to the other principles, may identify themselves as a Free Geek Affiliate but may not use the Free Geek name. Organizations that do not conform to all of the essential Principles can neither use the Free Geek name nor claim affiliation. This does not, in itself, prevent collaboration with Free Geek, as we are committed to assisting other organizations that want to make the world a better place.
