A FreekBox is the computer built in our Build Program and given to our Adoption Program volunteers.

Current (Freekbox 3)

Current hardware specs (which change over time) are:

  • Pentium III 500-566
  • 128MB RAM
  • 6 - 7 GB hard drive
  • 14x - 24x CD ROM drive
  • Floppy disk drive
  • 17 inch color monitor
  • 56k Modem
  • 10/100 Network card
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Speakers

Software specs (partial):

  • Debian/GNU Linux (sarge)
  • KDE desktop
  • Openoffice.org office suite
  • Firefox web browser

FreekBox 2

This box had lower specs which evolved over the years, and was based on Debian (woody).

FreekBox 1

This was the first standardized box we built and was based on Mandrake.
