This procedure seems complicated, but it can be completed easily in less than 10 minutes. Basically it involves removing the display and the top cover so that you can get to the battery.

1. Remove the main battery, hard drive and the keyboard.

2. Remove the switch cover (the plate above the keyboard.)

  • Gently run a thin-bladed screwdriver along the seam between the switch cover and the frame. Start from the center and work toward the edges. There are no screws, just plastic tabs.
  • Unplug the switch cover from the motherboard and set it aside.

3. Remove the touch pad and unthread the antenna wires.

  • Press down with your left thumb on a spot just to the left of the top of the pad, and gently pull up the pad with your right hand.
  • Unplug the pad and remove it.
  • Pop the antenna wires off the wireless card.
  • Gently pull the wires out of their channel all the way back to the display.

4. Remove the display panel.

  • Unplug the display from the motherboard (top left).
  • Remove the two Phillips screws on the front of the display, one in each corner.
  • Remove the four identical Torx screws on the back of the display (below the hinge).
  • Gently lift the display up and out and set it aside.

5. Remove the top cover.

  • Flip the laptop over to the underside with the front towards you.
  • Use a hook to remove the two rubber screw covers from the front corners.
  • Remove the ten identical Torx screws, including the two under the rubber covers.
  • Remove the three small Phillips screws from the hard drive compartment.
  • Flip the laptop right side up.
  • Remove two small Phillips screws located 1/3 down from the top and 1/3 over from the right side.
  • Gently pry the top loose, starting from the left and right hinge areas. It doesn't need to come all the way off the frame, but you can take it off if you like. (You may have to unplug the bluetooth connector to remove the top completely.)

6. Remove the CMOS battery.

  • Unplug the cable that is on top of the battery cable from the motherboard and move it aside.
  • Gently pull up on the battery, which is in the upper right corner. It's not fastened, but it might be stuck.
  • Gently unplug the battery cable and remove the battery/cable assembly.

7. Replace the battery assembly and reverse the process to reassemble.

  • Be careful to completely snap the top back into place.
  • Try to thread the antenna cables in the original channels and don't block the screw hole near the touchpad.
