This page is a living document of the tasks that the Staff Members in R&R do throughout a shift. It is in no way complete. Please add tasks that you do on a daily basis, or special tasks that are required of you during a shift.

Recycling

Recycling Daily Tasks

  • Volunteer coordination
    • tools check out/in, training, supervision, support of up to 12 volunteers
  • General Material handling
    • coordination of appropriate jobs for volunteers (table vs bench, ability and expected skills of volunteers)
    • QC material from table, Sorting, DNR area
    • gaylord replacements, coordination to ensure shipments are ready as planned
    • Gaylord Country coordination (forklift, signage)
    • clean up of work areas between shift changes and end of the day (2 staff- 45min)
  • facilitate advanced recycling tasks

  • Forklifting donations and pick-ups
    • unpredictable timing, we should probably always have a driver in the warehouse
  • Junk plastic sorting
    • Sorting into bins
    • Boxing/bagging bins
    • Palletizing

Recycling Special Tasks

  • Bulb sorting
    • Probably complicated
  • Battery sorting
    • Button battery burritos (separation of Lithium from Alkaline)
    • Alkaline Sorting
    • Lithium taping
    • Rechargeable battery bagging/boxing
    • USPS Shipping for RBRC
    • Paperwork weighing and scheduling
  • Hazardous material Sorting and disposal
    • Probably complicated
  • Toner logistics.
    • Boxing & Labling
    • palletizing
    • coordination with vendor
  • Glove Logistics
    • Taking down abandoned gloves
    • Refurbishing/replacing glove tags
    • Sorting clean gloves when they are returned from cleaner
  • Glasses Logistics
    • daily cleaning and replacement as needed
  • Motherboard processing
    • maintaining Special processes for special volunteers
  • Material preparation for Offsite Recycler
    • ensuring material is available
    • qc'ing and processing of returned material
  • Gaylord logistics
    • Using the forklift 2-3 times a day to keep the area in order(once/day takes much longer because things need to be juggled around much more.
    • Bringing in and arranging pallets/gaylords after a vendor pickup.
    • Ensuring that all full gaylords are swapped the night before a pickup.
  • Tool maintenance, repair and replacement.
  • Documentation
    • The recycling handbook would be handy for many reasons.

    • Media sorting and processing
    • all in one systems
    • search for missed gadget with batteries (CBM)
    • removal of batteries from gadgets
    • answering questions from Receiving staff and donors


Sorting

  • Volunteer Training
    • 30 minute orientation to Sortland: Recycling Training only, generally no Reuse due to high turnover of volunteers.
    • Answering many questions: Generally, reuse vs recycling of an item
  • Printer Triage
    • Appraisal for Reuse/Bulk
    • Pulling Ink/Toner
    • Pulling Paper
    • Bulb Identification
  • Organizing incoming donations
    • Safe Stacking
    • Checking for missed data bearing devices
    • Keeping possible valuable donations together
  • Backup for Receiving
    • Runner or backup tally-er
    • Large drop-offs
    • Unloading Truck on Pick-Up days
  • Monitor Tetris
    • Organizing covered CRT Monitors into 3 rows of 6 in a gaylord
  • Sorting full boxes to send to other areas
    • Identifying what belongs in boxes and what doesn't
    • Proper rubber-banding
    • Checking for broken items
    • Culling overflowing cables
    • Filmy Plastic sorting
    • Styrofoam bagging
  • Pulling Valuable Items for Sales

    • 5 min training on testing and cleaning for volunteer

    • Standardized keyboards to Grants, ergonomic, fancy, extra to Store.

Possible Staff Only Time Tasks

    • Setting aside recycling tasks for volunteers in advance. This can include sorting boxes that hold only designated recycling material, or tasks like keyboard cleaning, floppy disassembly, filmy plastic separation-- whatever is a Sorting area priority or a slow time task, dependent on the amount of donations on the incoming shelf.
    • Separation of SDA/ data bearing items out of boxes that may have arrived back in Sorting due to pick ups or Receiving misses
    • Ebay/ Amazon Appraisal of unusual/ rare/ possible Online Sales items
    • Follow-thru of intake checklist-- making sure that the intake list stays with the item it pertains to, and that all other accessories that came with the item make their way to the designated area as a whole.
    • Advanced Sorting: Identifying specific devices or materials other areas have requested and recycling them, utilizing the type of nuanced knowledge that is too time-consuming to add to volunteer training. Examples: certain types of Mac power chargers or older printer accessories

    • Data Security, including identifying unusual data devices
