These are miscellaneous notes and troubleshooting guides for the current Macbuild (3/4/2014). Not to be confused with the Linux Macbuild troubleshooting; which is found in the Macintosh Archive category.

OS X System Requirements

OS X 10.9 Mavericks

To install Mavericks, you need one of these Intel based Macs:

  • iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
    • There is a known issue with wifi and Mac OS 10.9 on the 2007 Macbook Pro. It's recommended we only install 10.7 on these until there is a patch.
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

OS X 10.7 Lion

Intel based systems that do not meet the Mavericks requirements will take Mac OS X 10.7. Lion will NOT install on G5 or G4 based systems. It MUST have an Intel processor to install 10.7.

Programs for Testing

This is the list of programs we commonly use for testing Mac systems.

Test CD writing

Testing the optical drive's ability to write CDs in a Mac OS:

  • Open text edit and save a text file to the desktop (ex: BURNME.txt)
  • Erase a rewritable CD disk
    • Insert a CD-RW disk
    • Open up Disk Utility (Click on the Disk Utility icon in the dock)
    • Click on the optical drive on the left sidebar of the Disk Utility window
    • Click on the Erase tab that comes up on the right side of the window
    • Confirm that it will perform a quick erase, and click on the Erase button
    • When the erasing is complete you'll get a dialog box. Choose Open Finder from the drop down menu and click OK. This will mount the disk on the desktop.
  • Write to a blank rewritable disk
    • Select the file you saved to the Desktop and click the Burn button at the top of Disk Utility.
    • The disk should automatically eject when finished. If the disk icon still appears on the desktop, drag it into the trash.

External Monitors

When a laptop is connected to an external monitor, it will stretch the display instead of mirroring it. The keyboard shortcut to mirror the display is Command + F1. If that isn't working, click on the Apple () icon, choose System Preferences. From the View menu, choose Displays then click the Arrangement tab and enable Mirror Displays.

Resetting SMC

Try this for when the system will not read the internal battery:

For laptops with removable batteries

  • Shut down the system, disconnect the power adaptor
  • Remove the battery
  • Press and hold the Power button for five seconds
  • Reconnect the battery and adaptor
  • Turn the system on and verify it is reading the internal battery

For laptops with difficult to remove batteries

  • Shut down the system
  • Connect it to a power adaptor
  • On the keyboard, press and hold the left side Shift-Control-Option keys and Power button at the same time
  • Release the Power button and keys
  • Turn the system on and verify it is reading the internal battery
