Our volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. They complete about 80% of the work done at Free Geek, and are afforded ample learning opportunities in the process.

All volunteers begin by taking a tour of Free Geek's facilities and culture. We offer tours 10 times a week, and the tours last approximately 30 minutes. After the tour, we sign up our new volunteers for their first shift. Volunteers generally choose to participate in one of our two main programs:

  • The Adoption Program, in which volunteers work 24 hours to earn a computer, a class on how to use it, and a year of free tech support, and
  • The Build Program, where volunteers learn about computer hardware and Linux software at their own pace. Builders assemble and quality test 5 computers, and may take home the 6th.
