Job Title: Office Support Volunteer Intern
Hours Weekly: 2 to 24 hours/week
Days Per Week: 1 to 5 days/week
Length of Internship: Minimum 3 months
Training: Orientation and Training Provided
Free Geek Supervisor: Mary Kate and Shawn

Responsibilities

  • Assist the front desk as necessary
    • Greet donors and volunteers warmly
    • Process donations and create receipts and invoices
    • Give tours and sign up new volunteers for our programs
    • Explain our volunteer programs succinctly
    • Direct volunteers to their stations, check on new volunteers at least once
    • Log volunteer hours, sign volunteers up for shifts
    • Answer questions about Free Geek pleasantly and knowledgeably
    • Retrieve voice mail messages and return calls
    • Answer incoming calls and deliver messages to staff effectively
  • Make class reminder calls to attendees before day of class
  • Manage all front desk documents and maintain surplus copies
    • Update and print sign-up sheets for classes and shifts
    • Update and print program descriptions, fax sheets, etc.
  • Learn and perform data entry
  • Learn and perform wiki editing
  • Manage Group Volunteer sign-up
  • Serve as a "Gatekeeper"
    • Manage cleaners
    • Manage coat and bag check
    • Verify visitors have appointments with staff
  • Maintain complete tour guide schedule
  • Check office supplies weekly and place item requests
  • Alphabetize build sheets monthly

  • Good phone skills
  • Experience with appropriate email etiquette
  • Pleasant, outgoing and approachable persona
  • Enjoy working with people
  • Interest in and ability to learn and work with Linux desktop managers and programs
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Work calmly amidst ongoing chaos
  • Understand Free Geek and Open Source philosophy
  • Self-motivated and self-managing with minimal supervision
  • Prioritize needs of visitors and volunteers
  • Able to learn new skills, programs, and information

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects with minimal supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
