Class Objectives

Students will be able to:
  • Create a spreadsheet
  • Save as Excel
  • Save on desktop and in home folder
  • Create a sample budget performing mathematical functions

Detailed Instructions

  1. Getting Started
    • You will need to organize your rows and columns first. Take some time to think about the information you want to represent and go from there. Often, this is one of the most difficult steps.
  2. Name your rows and columns
  3. Format cells-Currency
    • If you are entering monetary amounts, dates, or any other type of number, you can format the cell the automatically convert the numbers into the desired format.
      • To do this: Highlight row/column of your choosing. Then: Click on the format menu at the top of the screen. Scroll down to "Cell." Choose "Numbers."
      • After choosing "Numbers" Choose "currency" and then choose whichever currency format you want.
  4. Alignment
    • Choose right, center, or left. Highlight column and then click on the alignment you choose at the top of the screen.
  5. Sum
    • You can add, subtract, multiply, divide, and do other crazier functions in your spreadsheet!

Converting text to numbers

If you paste a table into a spreadsheet, numbers will be inserted as text and will not sort or format correctly. These can be fixed with a "Find and Replace". Search for ".*" and replace with "&", making sure you have selected "Regular Expressions" under Options.
