Install and Configure HP Printers

Pre-install steps

Need to install python-dev in order to satisfy all dependencies (This is not done automatically with HPLIP)

sudo apt-get install python-dev

Install steps

Go to HPLIP site

Click on "Download HPLIP"

Then :

  1. Select distribution (Ubuntu)
  2. Select version (10.04)
  3. Select printer type (Deskjet, etc...)
  4. Select model (Deskjet 4800 350ic, etc...)
  5. Click "Next"
  6. Click "Next"
  7. Click "Next" (This is not a mistake, you will click "Next" three times.)
  8. Click on the "Download HPLIP" black button
  9. Wait 5 seconds for SourceForge and then save the file.
  10. Go to the location you saved the file. (Most likely "Downloads")
  11. Right click on the "hplip-3.11.5.run" and click on "properties"
  12. Click on the "Permissions" tab and tick the check box that says "Allow executing file as program"
  13. Close the properties box
  14. Double click on the "hplip-3.11.5.run" file and select "Run"

Follow the prompts that HPLIP directs the user to do. It is important that when they reach the step of restarting that they physically restart it. Once completed, press "Enter"

Post Installation Steps

At this point, printer should be ready to go. Can go to Printer Administration to verify printer has been installed and can print a test page from here.
