Job Description Overview

The Reuse Program Coordinator is a fast paced and multidisciplinary position here at Free Geek. It combines the skills of volunteer management and program coordination with hands on refurbishment of used technology for the purpose of reuse. Build and Laptop volunteers are given a hands-on education to acquaint themselves with computer technology, which they use to build the computers that Free Geek gives back to the community. Volunteers in these programs arrive at Free Geek with varying levels of past computer experience, from no experience to years of hobby and professional computer building.

As a Collective level staff member, the Reuse Program Coordinator is responsible for integrating the Desktop and Laptop Build Programs into both the production flow as well as the entire organization. The Reuse Program Coordinator will train Build Program volunteers and coordinate volunteer Build Instructors. He/she will also target Build volunteers with specific skill-sets for other reuse programs at Free Geek.

Ultimately, with training, he/she will co-coordinate the Build and Laptops program, teaching shifts in both, but with a focus in Laptops.

As Free Geek grows, we see a need to begin to combine the larger Desktop Build Program with the smaller and more specialized Laptop Program. This coordinator will spearhead short and long-term plans to help combine elements of the programs so that Free Geek can respond quickly to the changing trends in the technology we refurbish.

He/she will work with the Production Committee to ensure other Reuse programs are operating smoothly. This is a job in a worker collective. Your first six months will be as a provisional member of the collective. At the end of that time Free Geek’s decision whether or not to bring you on as a permanent collective member will be made through a peer review process.

Note: You may be a great candidate and not know it. It’s more important for us to find someone who has a strong hands-on volunteer management background and an aptitude to learn nerdy stuff than for us to find a someone that speaks binary. Free Geek is an organization that teaches everyone who wants to learn about computers more than they ever wanted to know. We can teach you too.
