The Institutional Outreach and Development Coordinator is responsible for ensuring a healthy flow of hardware into Free Geek in order for the organization to fulfill its mission (give away awesome stuff) and maintain its financial well-being (maintain a steady supply of shiny gizmos to sell). The Institutional Outreach and Development Coordinator works closely with staff from all areas of Free Geek to identify hardware needs, outreach to local entities who can meet these needs (i.e. businesses, public organizations, etc.), and sustains ongoing conversations with these entities to foster long-term partnerships.

The successful Institutional Outreach and Development Coordinator:

  • gets excited about the PR and marketing end of this position,
  • has a proven history of stellar communication (phone, email, documentation, etc.),
  • is excited to step up to the challenge of engaging multiple stakeholders and work collaboratively with them all to accomplish what the organization needs
  • has one eye always looking towards Free Geek's future,
  • is comfortable "talking shop" offsite,
  • is super personable and enjoys talking with people, and
  • has a strong sense of humor.

Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with Reuse and Receiving coordinators to
    • identify the hardware needs of Free Geek's programs
    • target entities which could be strategic long-term partners in meeting Free Geek's hardware needs
    • initiate and maintain contact with these entities
    • create informational and promotional materials to support and promote partnerships as needed
  • Perform institutional outreach to secure ongoing donations from corporation/institutions
  • Maintain relationships with current corporate/institutional donors
  • Positively represent Free Geek and its mission to the public at large
  • Field incoming requests for pickups/donations
  • Negotiate services and prices with donors of all levels
  • Explore other options for generating pickup revenue (e.g. Energy Trust programs)
  • Develop essential documents for corporate donations (workflow agreements, hold harmless agreements, certificates of destruction)
  • Establish a schedule for expected donations from ongoing donors to use for workflow forecasting
  • Schedule pickups and pick up donations of computer hardware with Free Geek's truck
  • Attend committee meetings as necessary

  • Experience with and interest in working collaboratively
  • Ability to work in a consensus decision making process related to staff and policy issues
  • Ability to lift at least 75 lbs
  • Friendly, persistent, and outgoing personality
  • Patient and courteous with the public
  • Likes working with people
  • Detail oriented, solid organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Empowered and self-motivated organizer
  • Extremely comfortable using computers, possesses the ability and willingness to learn how to use Free Geek communication tools, including wiki, RT, database, etc.
  • Able to work in an informal, friendly environment with a diverse staff AND to understand what professionalism means in this kind of environment
  • Not afraid to ask questions, but able to work on projects almost entirely without supervision
  • Able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes
  • Operate a 16' box truck, fork lift, and pallet jack (training available)
  • POSITION REQUIRES A DRIVER'S LICENSE

Desired skills:

  • Fluency in other language(s)
  • Familiarity with how large-scale IT departments work
