Just to let you know, '''we only take 10 service learning volunteers at any one time'''.  So you might not be able to do your hours here.  Sorry if we can't accommodate you, but we can only do so much.  You're always welcome to join our ranks as a [http://www.freegeek.org/volunteer.php regular volunteer], but then we couldn't fill out any paperwork on you.  No initial signing of agreements or super-short evaluations of your performance.  Sorry.

If you're hoping to learn to build computers with us, or become a Linux geek, you're welcome to: it will take 60-80 hours of your time to do this, though.  We call it the Build Program, and we ask our build volunteers to take the time to learn about hardware and software and troubleshooting and build 5 or more boxes for us.  As you might guess, this takes time.  Ask your tourguide about this (see below) if you're interested.

If you come here as a service learning volunteer, you'll disassemble computers, receive equipment donations from individuals, move stuff to where it needs to go within the building, and/or do some basic data entry. All of these tasks help us reuse and recycle computer hardware, and are important to us!

It's always a good idea to let the Intern Program Coordinator know where these folks come from, so she can be in touch with their school if Liane gets overloaded.

# '''Take our tour''': come in at noon or 6pm any Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.  Sign up as a general volunteer at the end of the tour.  You don't need an appointment for the tour, and the whole process should only take about 45 minutes.

# '''Talk to the person in charge of Receiving''':  He/She will be able to tell you if there's room for more service learning volunteers in our program, sign your initial paperwork, and tell you when to sign up for your volunteer shifts.  You'll be volunteering with her/him most of the time, and will be the one filling out your short evaluation at the end of your volunteer term.  In other words, he/she will be your Free Geek supervisor, your man with the plan, your go-to woman.

# '''Sign up for your shift, come in and volunteer, and log your hours after every shift''': Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Pretty simple, huh?  I hope you have a great time volunteering at Free Geek.  If you have any other questions, feel free to send an email to volunteer[at]freegeek.org.

Sometimes we get a rash of volunteers who only need 10 or so hours for school credit. Often they're from high schools, sometimes from PCC.

Since these folks need a little eval of their performance at the end of their time here, we need to hook 'em up with a FG supervisor. Liane's the only one who's said she can do this. So here's what ya do:

  • Tell 'em they'll only be able to volunteer in recycling.
  • Sign them up for a recycling shift when Liane's there. Find liane's schedule by going to http://bullwinkle/work_shifts/list and adjusting the fields up top to only select Liane's schedule.
  • Tell 'em that they'll need to introduce themselves to Liane when they first get there so she knows who they are. If they don't do this and then ask for an eval at the end of their time back there, she won't fill out the form.
  • Tell 'em that they'll need to only sign up for recycling shifts when Liane's working back there, and to tell the front desk this when scheduling shifts.

It's always a good idea to let the Intern Program Coordinator know where these folks come from, so she can be in touch with their school if Liane gets overloaded.
