Talk:Board orientation manual

Here are some of my notes for developing this manual: programs:

  • grants! significantly more computers went out as grants than were adopted in the last month. demonstrates involvement in the greater community. should be more of a major talking point.
  • education! you mention classes, but this could stand more emphasis, since many of us see education growing in importance as we evolve.
  • store - i might mention that selling tested, functional hardware directly supports the reuse aspect of the mission
  • tech support - ensures that the computers remain useful, on one hand, and provides a place for skilled volunteers to gain job skills & experience

legal responsibilities:

  • while it's true that the board does not sign the 990, we did have to signify that we had each individually reviewed it.
  • the two sentences about officers do not seem to belong in the para about liability (officers are not otherwise mentioned in that para)
  • typo: "recuse", not "recues"
  • "As a Director, you will not only be responsible for reviewing the budget, by actively voting to enact it (or by voting against it if you feel there is cause)." I'd like to get away from the voting language, since people reading this will not understand that there is not an actual yes/no vote taken, but rather a consensus-based process of inquiry and direction, with modifications and clarifications requested until we can all approve the budget.

need to add the section communication:

  • email lists (we will have to have a conversation at the board level about how the council list will be used, and whether we want to try to use the board list for "executive session" type stuff). for now, point out that the membership of the board list is limited to current board and collective-level staff, and only members may see the archives (give url), while the council list is more wide open, and the minutes list (where all minutes should go, though redacted if necessary) is open to the public.
  • using email. absolutely required.
  • FG email address
  • wiki.
