Note: This internship requires the intern to be at Free Geek during at least one of our Technical Support shifts each week. Our shifts are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 3 to 5pm. During these times, volunteers who have received computers from Free Geek through our Adoption Program are welcome to call or arrive in person to speak about any technical support issues they may have.

Job Title: Tech Support Intern
Hours Weekly: 4 to 8 hours/week
Days Per Week: At least 1 day/week
Length of Internship: Minimum 3 months
Training: Orientation and Training Provided
Free Geek Supervisor: Luiz

Responsibilities

  • Learn the operating environment of the FreekBox
  • Answer questions from FreekBox owners regarding their computers over the phone, by email, and in person
  • Follow technical support "walk through" procedure to find the problem
  • Determine whether FreekBox owners' technical issues may be solved by phone/email or must be solved in person
  • Teach computer skills to technical support recipients, allowing for differences in personality and skill level of recipients
  • Work with Build Program volunteers and instructors to solve tech support issues
  • Perform computer swapping procedure when necessary
  • Document what you do

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic command line for Linux
  • Experience with at least one Linux text editor (nano, vi, or vim, but not emacs)
  • A high level of patience
  • An interest in teaching
  • Sense of humor
  • An aptitude for learning new computer software
  • A desire to work with people
  • Willingness and ability to maintain issue tracking records

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects with minimal supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
