Aspect Ratio
  • ratio of horizontal resolution to vertical resolution
  • common aspect ratios in U.S. and their uses are:
    • 4:3
      • also called "Fullscreen" to distinguish it from "Widescreen"
      • found in virtually all CRT TVs and monitors and many LCD monitors up to about 20"
      • common resolutions in this aspect ratio 640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200
    • 16:9
      • considered a "Widescreen" aspect ratio
      • most common in HDTVs, though some recent widescreen LCD Monitors and laptop screens are using this format
      • common resolutions in this aspect ratio are 1280x720, 1366x768, 1600x900, 1920x1080, and 2560x1440
    • 16:10
      • considered a "Widescreen" aspect ratio
      • most common aspect ratio for widescreen LCD monitors, especially for high-end IPS panel monitors at about 24" and up, though cheaper displays are increasingly going to 16:9
      • common resolutions in this aspect ratio are 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1200, and 2560x1600
