This is an outline for a meeting with Sean and Darren regarding my work on updating the Laptop Build program curriculum. Lynnae 01:32, 10 October 2012 (UTC)

What is GRUB?

GRUB stands for Grand Unified Binder (can be abbreviated as GRUBinder to reduce confusion). It encompasses the Laptop Build program curriculum as seen by the volunteer. There will be a physical binder for (mostly) static content, and a wiki version that includes dynamic or very specific content (model, software or part specific tips, and the like).

GRUB Organization

There are three build binder categories: Procedures, Testing, and the Appendix.

  • The Procedures section is composed of four checklists that replace the build/recycling/as-is/eval guides. They are short and sweet, with little-to-no how-to information.
  • The Testing section is used for instructions for tests listed on the Keeper label that are not included in the evaluation or build process (memtest, battery test, and badblocks). May include detailed component testing steps for things like optical drives and input devices, or the software we use to test them.
  • The Appendix has two sections. The first section is used for educational materials organized in modules. These modules are both an annotated guide to an individual Procedures step, and a self-guided lesson for review or introduction. The second section is composed of tips and troubleshooting steps that are too specific or beyond the scope of the other guides. The second section will probably be referenced in the binder, but the articles themselves will probably be wiki only (the binder should be relatively static content, wiki is for both static and dynamic).

GRUB Goals

  • Separate and clarify procedures, educational material, troubleshooting steps, and testing steps. Currently the curriculum mushes together testing steps with educational instructions and tips with no schematic organization.
  • Give each section and module specific goals and intended outcomes.
  • Start developing standardized templates and schemas for Reuse educational materials.
  • Provide awesome supplemental materials for those who want to geek out, or who need extra help with procedure steps.
  • Investigate means of adapting curriculum to meet the needs of different learning styles. Could use help with ESL ideas.
  • Update Current Curriculum to reflect 12.04 changes
