The important thing to understand first is that conceptually the linux file system can be thought of as a tree with branches. (This is in contrast to the "container" model of MS Windows.) Individual drives and partitions have no meaning for the filesystem until they have been hung (mounted) on some branch of this tree. The base of this tree is the root directory or "/".
