Memory (also known as RAM, for Random Access Memory) is one of the most important pieces of a computer. It's what the computer actively uses while it "thinks." (As opposed to a Hard Disk, where the computer stores information for the long haul.) As of 2006, 512 MB is a fairly common amount for new computers, while a common hard drive might have 100 times that (50 GB.)

This web page has an excellent overview of what the different kinds of computer memory (RAM) are, how memory works, etc.
