When your new Ubuntu linux box boots for the first time, it will walk you through the process of creating a new account. Most of the questions are common sense and can be changed later, but mistakes in creating the username and password can cause the account creation to fail, resulting in needing to call tech support to fix. Pay special attention to the following rules:

  • The username must be a single word and not contain any capital letters
  • The password must not contain any spaces, but can contain lowercase and uppercase letters and numbers

If the account creation process fails (you are not able to log in), try the instructions at http://wiki.freegeek.org/index.php/Ubuntu_user_creation_error
