List of Policies - Policy Development
Policy
Approved at a Staff meeting on 12/19/2008
Your safety is the constant concern of Free Geek. The Safety committee makes regular inspections and holds regular meetings. They report to the whole collective to plan and implement further improvements in our safety program. Common sense and personal interest in safety are still the greatest guarantees of your safety at Free Geek.
The cooperation of every employee and volunteer is necessary to make Free Geek a safe place in which to work and volunteer. Help yourself and others by reporting unsafe conditions or hazards immediately to a staff member or, more specifically, to a member of the Safety committee. Begin right by always thinking of safety as you perform a task, or as you learn a new task.
The primary objective of the Safety Committee is to avoid accidents through the means of eliminating unsafe working conditions, and work practices. All employees are trained in how to train, both themselves and volunteers, how to perform tasks in their assigned areas.
Free Geek provides each new paid worker with a general safety training, as well as a safety training specific to the assigned work areas.
Free Geek will provide safety reading materials, signs and posters, which will be easily accessible to all employees and volunteers
- Specific safety rules and guidelines
- Running and horseplay is not cool.
- Provide safety equipment like gloves and goggles, and recommend their use.
- Provide dust masks and ear protection when needed.
- Wear appropriate clothing for the task.
- Wear closed-toed shoes while volunteering. (Closed-toed shoes are required for all volunteers and staff. - Liane, April 2011)
- Do not block access to fire extinguishers and circuit breaker boxes.
- Report any UNSAFE condition.
- Clean up spilled liquid, oil, or grease immediately.
- Clean up any items on floor that maybe stepped on causing slipping and falling.
- Do not smoke inside.
- Pile gizmo's, boxes, pallets, or other equipment so as not to block aisles, exits, fire fighting equipment, electric lighting or power panel, valves, etc. FIRE DOORS AND AISLES MUST BE KEPT CLEAR
- When stacking cardboard boxes, put the heavier and full one on the bottom. Watch for unstable stacking because of breaking down of bottom boxes sides. If the top box tips it could fall and hurt someone.
- Safe Lifting
- Use your legs, not your back.
- Lift the object with the heavy side closest to you.
- Keep the object close to your body.
- Get help from someone else to lift large or heavy items.
- Use hand trucks, and carts to move large or heavy items.
- Get help when loading as well as when unloading.
- Accident reporting
- Injury at Free Geek should be reported and receive First Aid attention. Serious conditions often arise from small injuries if they are not cared for at once. Please use the Injury Logging Procedure We use RT to track the all serious injuries.
