Optical Drive Bugs in Lucid

This page is for tracking and recording optical drive bugs in Lucid and recording troubleshooting methods. Whenever we encounter a system with a known bug, please record the type of system and Optical drive model and year. The goal of this endeavor is to more accurately track these issues and hopefully find some common thread.

Troubleshooting

Rythm Box does not release Audio CD image

This issue can be resolved by explicitly exiting RythmBox using the toolbar icon.

CD/DVD Image is not released when eject button on drive is used

It seems like Lucid's udev isn't catching the hardware events when an optical drive is ejected physically ejected. The simplest way to circumvent this is to do as much as you can from the software.

  • Eject discs by right-clicking on the desktop icon, and selecting Eject,
  • If a disc has already been removed, but the image is still mounted, you can unmount by right-clicking the icon and selecting Unmount,
  • If a new disc has been inserted while an old disc's image is still mounted, the new disc won't be mounted. In order to mount it, you'll have to unmount the old image and, usually, manually mount the new image. This can be done by going to Places->Computer, right-clicking the optical drive (It should show an icon of a CD and possibly its name) and choosing Mount.
  • If you're still having issues, and you're reasonably sure the drive is still good, try rebooting.
