If Free Geek staff is supposed to operate as a collective, why is seniority important? Sasuke 13:45, 14 October 2006 (PDT)

Some policies use seniority as a criteria. For instance if two people want vacation at the same time and we can only afford to let one person take the time off, we ask that they try to work it out amongst themselves and failing that, seniority determines who gets to take the time off. (We've never needed to resort to that, but it is the policy.) We could conceivably use seniority in a situation where layoffs are necessary and no one volunteers.
Collectives are just groups of people that set their own policies democratically. They still have to hire, fire, etc. There's no obvious contradiction between determining seniority for the types of reasons mentioned and being a collective.
